QB Matthew Sluka to exit UNLV, says 'representations' not upheld

UNLV starting quarterback Matthew Sluka said he will not play any more games this season for the undefeated Rebels, citing "certain representations" not being upheld by the program.

Sluka announced his decision in a social media post late Tuesday night and added that he will use his redshirt this year.

"I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled," Sluka posted on X. "Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program."

Sluka did not detail the reasons behind his decision, but college athletes are now routinely being paid for their name, image and likeness by companies or third-party organizations called collectives, which serve a particular school's athletes.

NCAA redshirt rules allow players to retain a year of eligibility if they play four or fewer games in a season. Sluka, who played four seasons (2020-23) at Holy Cross before transferring to UNLV this past offseason, still has one more year of eligibility that he could use at another school next season.

I posted some stuff in the game week thread as I was too lazy to search. This included the brother's retort to the coach... then someone saying to him "so you're gonna show us the deals right?" ... then the rumor he was getting big money offers...

Little bit of a hijack here, but is there any professional sports league that allows a player to stop playing during the season to renegotiate their current contract because they are having a great season? I'm not being sarcastic, I am truly curious as I am not aware of one.
college football isn’t a “professional sports league”, is it? i mean the players don’t have contracts as such, with the universities in which they have enrolled, right?

what i mean is that there’s no legal standing for universities or athletic programs to claim breach of contract in such a case.

the contracts presumably in place between players and their NIL benefactors would i guess be a different thing.

So, the Dad is now saying that living expenses weren't being covered. That's how I know the dad is full of shit. Living expenses are part of the scholarship package and have been for long before NIL. UNLV is a poverty program, but they're not so much of one as to not cover scholarship athletes living expenses. I'm guessing one of two things: either the kid was told he was being yanked as the starter or the parents' agent sold them the line that he could get big time money for the kid.

If only there was a governing body over College Athletic matters that had the foresight to insert itself in these contract matters and institute some guiding principles.

Rooting for the school on this one. If the kid wins, it's only a matter of time before others try and pull this stuff a school/team you care about.
They came for the ginger Mountain West QBs and I did not speak out, because I am not a Mountain West fan.
