USFL / XFL (merged official thread)

The G.O.A.T.
Well, looks like the return of the league is official with a start date of 2020.

Seems to be a good time to return and offer competition and hopefully Vince has learned a lot from his failures, and I think he has as he's an extremely successful businessman.

My thoughts were.....where would you place teams?

Also, I wonder if they'd allow kids out of high school to play and pay college kids - that would really create an interesting dynamic.

XFL's highest attended cities were San Fran, NY and Orlando which seem like logical fits again.....I was thinking Columbus and San Antonio would be good additions also. Thoughts?

I’m sure all the best athletes are going to flock to a league that has the same CTE concerns as the NFL for 1/20th the money.

The first two minutes of players standing for the anthem will definitely keep people hooked for the next three hours of absolute garbage on the field, thus solving why the league folded the first time.

It's possible, but I think Vince sees a chance to fill a hole in the market. A 3 month league in the spring/early summer can be successful and I can't imagine this will be anything like the gimmick filled attempt the first time around. The guy didn't sell $100 million of his stocks to regurgitate the same plan.

I do not understand why anyone would have any faith in Vince McMahon in general, his business acumen in particular, or a league venture that failed miserably previously under what were arguably much more favorable circumstances... are pissed off white males over 50 going to live stream these games to watch the national anthem standing in 2020? and the whole CTE thing... people are questioning the long term viability of football in general, which is probably an overreaction, but it does not seem like a great time for a startup that no one really cares about.

It seems equally likely that McMahon will raise some money on this, turn around and do something shady or completely unrelated with it while laughing at the investors dumb enough to think reviving the XFL was a good idea. But hey, I’m sure Vince is a great guy and I just don’t know him well enough.

He certainly doesn’t look like a shady asshole or anything.

My hunch is that this will be marketed to Trump country. It'll be the normal NFL gameday nationalism and military fetishism turned to 11. Any form of racial/anthem protest will be banned and so on. Essentially, McMahon sees an opening to go after people pissed off that the NFL has allowed the anthem protests to continue. I don't want to make this political. This is just the marketing angle that I see them taking.

Big difference this time around is the AFL/AFL2 setup is gone. Now the Arena League is just four teams. The UFL recently folded. NFL Europe was folded awhile ago. There's much less competition for viewer eyeballs and developmental talent. Also sounds like Vince is eyeing shorter broadcast windows with games running about two hours total.

Could work if they start small. There's at least a dozen streaming content providers that would bid for legitimate sports content if the traditional networks don't take the bait.
