Tony Skinn (Maryland Assistant Coach)

Kevin Warren is an ass
Ohio State men's basketball coach Chris Holtmann will fill the final spot on his coaching staff by hiring Seton Hall assistant Tony Skinn.

The development was first reported by Jerry Carino at Gannett New Jersey, and a source close to the program confirmed the report although the deal has not yet officially been signed. Pending the finalization of the deal and a standard background check, he could be officially announced as soon as Monday.

Skinn, who played college basketball for George Mason and was part of the program's run to the Final Four in 2006 as a No. 11 seed, spent three years at Louisiana Tech before joining Seton Hall in April 2018.

With the Pirates, Skinn primarily worked with the team's guards and was known for his recruiting, according to his official biography on the program's website. Before being hired at Louisiana Tech, Skinn enjoyed a professional career that included a stint with the Orlando Magic in the 2009 NBA Summer League. He was the athletic director at Paul International High School in Washington, D.C., as well as an assistant coach for AAU program Nike Team Takeover.

He comes highly regarded from basketball personnel at the prep, college and NBA levels and with a reputation as a high-level recruiter and position coach with strong connections to the Washington D.C. area. Born in Nigeria, Skinn grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland.

While at Louisiana Tech, Skinn was part of a team that came to Value City Arena and defeated the Buckeyes, 82-74, on Nov. 24, 2015, a game the Bulldogs led from start to finish.

Skinn replaces Terry Johnson, who accepted an assistant coaching position at Purdue earlier this spring.

What a hire:groove:

Onto the Buckeyes
Word of Skinn’s hire began to surface last Thursday, and The Dispatch confirmed that Holtmann plans to hire Skinn. Right now, the only holdup is paperwork and a background check standard for all hires. Skinn could be officially introduced as the third and final member of Holtmann’s staff as soon as this week.

He arrives having received endorsements from every level of organized basketball in this country, from the grassroots level to the NBA, to Holtmann. That level of trust, Larranaga said, is key when hiring a new assistant from a new area or league.

“Tony’s a student of the game,” Larranaga said. “When he moves from Seton Hall to Ohio State, he’ll spend a great deal of his time studying Ohio State University as a school. He’ll study the Big Ten as a league. He’ll study the players, get to know what their likes and dislikes are. Get to know the recruits in the Midwest which more than likely will be an area that he has to get more and more familiar with.

Konkol said the two would have lengthy conversations while recruiting together at Louisiana Tech because he believed both then and now that Skinn will be a head coach eventually. Larranaga said it was clear from his earliest encounters with Skinn that he was positioning himself for success in whatever field he would choose and that he’s not surprised it’s in coaching.

Now, he’ll be on his biggest stage yet as he takes over for Terry Johnson, who left the Buckeyes for an assistant coaching job at Purdue. Roles will be adjusted among Skinn, Ryan Pedon and Jake Diebler, but each will have his hands on the team’s recruiting, offensive and defensive plans and positional skills. June will be busy: as in-person recruiting resumes for the first time since the pandemic, the Buckeyes will have at least one visitor every day during the month.

It might be a lot to take on, but Konkol has seen this script before.

“When he came here he certainly didn’t pretend to have all the answers,” Konkol said. “He learned an awful lot. He asked a lot of questions, and next thing you know, he did a phenomenal job here and I know he did at Seton Hall as well. Very confident he will at Ohio State.”

Breaks Harden's ankles

“It’s funny: it does (help),” Skinn told The Dispatch. “That thing doesn’t seem to go away. I don’t talk about it, but somehow it’s got never-ending life. It’s going on year 10, and it comes around every few weeks, man.”

The moment came during the second quarter of what would become a 156-73 win for the United States during the preliminary round of the Olympics. With the Americans ahead 78-51 with a little more than a minute to play, Skinn takes the ball deep in his own backcourt with the shot clock winding down as Harden switches onto him. After cutting across the midline, Skinn crosses back over for a step-back three-pointer as Harden awkwardly stumbles to his left, nearly doing the splits as he collapses onto the court.

Seems like the Hartline of the basketball staff. This guy is in on the recruitment of some serious ballers!
Get them to Columbus and then we'll boost that cred towards Hartline standards. Hell, I thin we'd even take Washington standards to start out.
