Herman has typically been considered the strongest head coach candidate among the OSU assistants, a young fast riser who called the plays for one of the top 10 offenses in the country. But Herman's name wasn't mentioned as much this offseason, maybe because there didn't seem to be a job that made sense as an ideal fit. There were faint rumblings when Chris Petersen left Boise State, but that job was filled quickly by a coach with a Boise background.

Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com made similar points when discussing Herman in a mailbag Friday.
This winter there has been an unusually small window of coaching changes, meaning less opportunities. There are some vacancies (Bowling Green, EMU, Wyoming and Arkansas State) that a guy like Herman isn't going to jump for. If, say, Virginia came open, I'd think Herman would've been in the mix. At 38, he's a rising star in the football coaching world.

Herman has a lot of connections in Texas, where he has recruited successfully for the Buckeyes and where he coached previously at Rice. He also has Big 12 experience at Iowa State, and he went to college in California. So Herman certainly wouldn't be looked at only in the Midwest. But he may he around for year three in Columbus.

Ohio State football: Tom Herman has unfinished business

As a couple of defensive coaches did, Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman could have left after the Buckeyes’ once-promising 2013 season came to a grinding, two-loss halt.

Herman, coming off a record-setting year by the OSU offense, was rumored to have offers. The most significant reportedly came from new Texas coach Charlie Strong. Bottom line: Herman opted to stay at Ohio State and continue what he considers to be an invaluable apprenticeship under coach Urban Meyer.

“I didn’t come close to leaving,” said Herman, headed into his third year with Buckeyes. “I think this is the greatest job in the country, and I believe that wholeheartedly. … I am working for a guy who has taught me — really, the X’s and O’s part of it is inconsequential. It’s all of the how-to-build-a-champion, how to build a winner, how to develop leaders and how to deal with kids and manage people. The lessons I am learning from him are invaluable.

“And I felt like there was a little unfinished business based on the way we finished this season.”

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller said much the same thing when he decided to return for his senior season rather than enter the NFL draft. Herman planned to return regardless, but what a bonus.

“I think any time you have the two-time defending Big Ten player of the year coming back, you’re excited,” Herman said. “The thing about him is he still has so much more he can improve.

“We’re still learning and growing and developing, so the work doesn’t become any easier, but hopefully the end result will be a guy that has worked himself into being a Heisman Trophy finalist, and a Big Ten and national champion by the time it’s all said and done.”

The 2013 season didn’t end like either of them wanted, but there were strides made by the offense.

I hope coach Herman comes up with some different WR route combo's than what we've been seeing. I like the deep routes but there need to be some check downs for Braxton. Too many times this past year it was all deep and Braxton holding the ball. A couple of opportunities to read the defense and subsequent actions to do so effectively by Brax makes the offense incredible from top to bottom, imo.

Q. On Braxton, as good as he was on Saturday, do you have an envisionment that it can get even better?
COACH MEYER: Much better. You're talking about an incredible release, arm strength. There's still some things he cowboyed it a few times which means when they kind of broke down he panicked in the pocket when he didn't have to. We already had a meeting this morning about it. And he needs to know where his check down is. Those are just two things from this past game he panicked in the pocket three, four times and he panicked to the point where he didn't know where his check down was, that's a problem. That's not good quarterback play.

I wonder if he seriously left his rental on the road? Seems like he was kidding and then seriously bailed and found another ride. Either way, pretty entertaining story on the potential horrors of recruiting.

Because it probably normally results in an extra charge of a couple hundred dollars, on top of being on the hook for towing expenses and the ridiculous refuel charges. Given the conditions, maybe they waived the charges or Herman decided that he makes enough, its whatever and worth it to keep the recruiting on schedule.
