When Texas opens the 2006 season against North Texas, they will be without their top two QBs from last year. Vince Young, whose cup runeth over, has departed for the NFL. So has his backup Matt Nordgren who signed a free agent contract with the Eagles. In their wake, talent and youth remain with no clear cut choice.

Burnt Orange Nation recently had an excellent interview with columist Kirk Bohls of the Austin American Statesman where they discussed, among other things, a two QB system. General sentiment seems to be Coach Mack Brown will envoke the two-headed QB monster. The leading candidates are redshirt-freshman Colt McCoy and true frosh Jevan Snead and Bohls summed up their battle this way...

I think they (Texas coaches) think Jevan has the bigger upside, but that Colt has been around longer and probably will take the first snap of the season.

If true, the question then becomes - with Ohio State looming as the 2nd game of the year - how long will Mack use a two QB system? As we know, Ohio State isn't North Texas and with two freshman QBs, one can easily see some frayed nerves if a QB carousel happens. Ohio State fans know all too well how two QBs worked last year for us versus, ironically, Texas. Plus, there's the factor of replacing a gifted, highly successful QB with unprovent talent. For instance, NC State had major difficulty finding a guy who could handle to job after Philip Rivers departed. I'm not trying to look for a story that isn't there - just think it's going to be a factor come Sept.

Fortunately, we are locked in with Troy Smith - provided he doesn't do anything to find himself on the NCAA and/or legal blotter.
