Yeah, that defense was youth flag football bad on Saturday.
Rattler has been below average all season, and on Saturday had the most yards he has had all season, best comp%, most passing TDs, highest QBR, highest passer rating and most completions! This is the same QB who threw for 200yds and 3TDs and Vandy, and against Tenn he looks he should be invited to NYC for the heisman

Steve Spurrier reacts to South Carolina's upset of Tennessee

Former South Carolina and Florida coach Steve Spurrier used to chide Tennessee at every opportunity during his career in the SEC. He kept a close eye on the Volunteers' tussle with the Gamecocks. Tennessee's College Football Playoff hopes ended on the road after South Carolina became the first unranked team in college football to score 63 points against a top-five opponent in nearly 100 years.

“It was impressive,” Spurrier said in an interview with The Post and Courier (Charleston, S.C.) this week. “And those receivers caught everything. And the O-line gave him time. Yeah, I almost feel sorry for Tennessee. “They’re not going to win the division, they’re not going to win the SEC, they’re not going to get in that final four. They’re just going to have a little bit better than average year now. Someone told me, ‘Tennessee is probably headed for the Citrus Bowl now.’ I guess that’s kind of a mean thing to say.”

Spurrier is infamous for saying, "you can't spell Citrus without UT" during his time as coach of the Gators. He had several wars with the Volunteers.

I have always liked him. He had it made at Florida. I'll say he had the job there as long as he wanted it. He turned Florida into a perennial National Championship contender. In 12 years he went 122-27-1, 82-12 winning the SEC Championship in 1990, '91, '93-'96, 2000 and the National Championship in 1996. He was kind of laid back and had the program on auto pilot, he really didn't have to "recruit" much; basically, he was able to just "select" who he wanted from the talent in Florida. I was really surprised when he left Florida to be HC of the Redskins. Besides, how many Heisman winners can you name that came back to their alma mater as head coach and won a National Championship?

Now I have run the numbers and... yeah...

Woof, Smokey... Just... woof...

They allowed 453 yards, the same number they allowed to Florida, but against Florida that was actually worse, as Florida's average yardage is significantly less than half of that.

But they allowed a PE of 233.82, to Spencer freaking Rattler. How bad is that?

That's a differential pass efficiency of 1.730. That is almost unbelievably bad. It is so bad that you can only do that bad for a game; NO ONE has a DPE that bad on the season. The worst season-long DPE is Charlotte's at 1.324. So Charlotte allows 32.4% higher passing efficiency than what teams normally get. For one day, Tennessee was more than twice as bad.

How bad is that?

There are 4 Power 5 teams that have had a worse day this season, and some of those are P5 only by courtesy:
  • Louisville (against BC)
  • Miami Florida (against MTSU)
  • MSU (against Minnesota)
  • Northwestern (against Wisconsin)
That's it. That's the list. Those are the single-game DPE performances that were worse than what Tennessee did against Spencer.

As some have observed: Yes, Tennessee is usually pretty bad. Their season-long DPE is 1.046, which is 80th in FBS. Seriously... Allowing 4.6% more than your opponent usually gets in PE is 80th in the country. They allowed 73% more PE than Rattler usually gets.

So on the season, Tennessee is ranked 80th, and is thus better than about 39% of passing defenses, better than about 25% of the power 5.
There have been over 600 P5 passing defense performances this year: Tennessee against South Carolina was better than less than 1% of them.
