Ex-player breaks DL's jaw in fistic encounter

Former LSU DB Troy Giddens has not had a good year. First he was arrested for breaking into an LSU female golfer's apartment and stealing her stuff. Then he -- along with Zhamal Thomas and Kyle Anderson -- were kicked off the team for incident.
Now Giddens has been arrested for the second time in three weeks, this time for hitting freshman DL Joseph Barksdale and breaking his jaw (all in the same apartment complex, mind you).
LSUPD arrested ex-University football player Troy Giddens on Sunday at 2:54 a.m. after he allegedly injured current football player Joseph Barksdale. ...
Giddens punched Barksdale, a freshman defensive lineman from Detroit, and broke his jaw.
...
Rog? said LSUPD thinks Barksdale did not attempt to retaliate against Giddens.
"He was hit, and he was hurt bad enough to where he was out of the fight at that point," Rog? said.

Ironic - as posted to the Barksdale thread - one upshot of note. Those players who are kicked off the team, still being kept on school premises.

Zhamal Thomas and Kyle Anderson were the other LSU players dismissed April 9. Thomas was arrested in connection with the same burglary as Giddens and Anderson for a separate incident, a fight outside an off-campus bar.
Bonnette said all three players remained on scholarship and in school after the dismissal to protect the program's NCAA mandated Academic Progress Rating. Under that program schools are penalized when athletes leave the school while not in good standing.
Nothing quite like having the letter of the APR rules followed to the letter, while spitting in the face of their spirit and intent.

Doesn't surprise me... maybe the NCAA will clear this up next year (most likely not).

It would take a pretty creative rule to close this up while not simulatenously opening up another. It's also not much of a loophole. By keeping the players in school and getting them to finish the semester, it puts the players in a much better position to go somewhere else.

The school still takes a small hit.
