When Jimbo signed on, the DFBIA insisted he would solve their "Urban problem." He would out-coach, out-work and out-recruit Urban because not only was he a rock star coach with an NFL pedigree...he was a "_ichigan _an." Well, we know all about the head-to-head results, but let's see how they both performed after 5 seasons...

Urban: 61-6 overall, 39-2 vs B1G, 1 National Championship, 1 B1G Title, 5-0 vs scUM, 2 Playoff Berths, 3-2 Bowls

Harbrau: 47-18 Overall, 32-12 vs B1G, 0 Championships of any kind, 0-5 vs tOSU, 1-4 Bowls

Ryan Day made a playoff appearance in year one. The recruiting drop-off post-Urban they were expecting actually seems to be getting even better as Day and Company already reeled in an outstanding 2020 class and are recruiting at an historic level in 2021.

They're fucked and I think a majority of them are beginning to really realize it.

To be honest, Urban was already semi-burnt out when he took the Ohio State job. His intensity level and risk taking (with recruits, at least) was way down from his days at UF; he had health concerns; he pledged to spend more time with his family; and he hired way too many friends and yes-men as his assistants.

Ryan Day is younger and more energized than Urban; he seems better able to connect with today's athletes (which makes sense considering he is basically a generation younger than Urban); and he seems to have the perfect temperament, personality, and mindset to be the CEO of a major CFB program. Maybe I'm too much living in the moment, but I think that Ryan Day will take Ohio State to even higher heights than Urban.

dfbia reveled in meyer's departure like they reveled in tressel's departure, but i think they're increasingly realizing that meyer's departure only solidified osu's long-term stranglehold on the rivalry and the conference race. osu had a choice: 1) keep meyer and risk a poor transition down the road when controversies may only worsen and the coaching candidate pool may grow muddy or 2) opt for the easiest, most obvious transition in the history of sport, which all but guarantees consistent future success.

i still wonder if we made the right choice...

Day seems to combine the strengths of Meyer (ruthless competitiveness, aggression, recruiting prowess, and whole person development for players) and Tressel (calm demeanor, on field discipline, Michigan-slaying, and whole person development for players [started with him and ramped up under Urban]) without having any of their weaknesses (defensiveness, cronyism, X's and O's stubbornness, hypocrisy [real or imagined by the media]). I think he's going to be our Saban (but less of an a-hole).

I'm glad you said this. Crazy as it seems to say it, IMO given the talent Meyer recruited, his teams underperformed. There should have been one more NC in the mix and the 38 - zip blowout loss made the road to CFPs all the harder. Some of that shortfall comes on retaining friends and sons of friends - well at least one. Day's staff picks have made a difference on the field.
