Matt Barnes (DC Memphis Tigers)

"It's been great," Barnes said. "I've really enjoyed it so far. I really enjoyed the opportunity to be involved with special teams and I will remain involved with special teams. But I'm just really passionate about coaching defense. So, for me, I've really enjoyed the opportunity to dive headfirst into defense.

"Kerry and I have worked in chorus through this transition and Kerry remains to be very involved with our defensive backs. But I think this is something that is helping him, because the back-end is so involved. I think maybe taking some of that off his plate and alleviating some of that stress or time spent allows him to really dive into the coordinator role and see some things that maybe you don't see as well when you're immersed in the defensive backfield. You maybe don't see the whole picture quite as well type of thing.

"So, hopefully it's allowing him to have some more time to really focus on the coordinating."

Ohio State's Ryan Day says Matt Barnes, not Kerry Coombs, called defensive plays vs. Tulsa

Asked if this would be a permanent move, Day said he wants to go back and review the film and see how it worked but that he does believe this is how the roles will stay going forward.

"I thought we changed things up, just how we did things structurally on game day, which, again, we'll look at the film and analyze that and see how that went," Day said. "But I thought for the most part they played with good energy, they prepared well during the week, everybody was on the same page. There were some in-game adjustments that were done much better and more efficient than the week before."

I saw the D communicating with each other more today in this game than I have since a time I can't even remember. Defensive Captain in my book is Hickman and he's out there directing traffic before making every tackle. Better every week is all they can try to do
Mixing up our looks masterfully too... at this point when we line up in single high pre snap it's off putting.
