XU aims to keep Miller
School might be competing with power programs

One of the most important aspects of Mike Bobinski's job is playing out this week.
The Xavier athletic director is trying to reward men's basketball coach Sean Miller for his recent success and at the same time persuade Miller to stay at Xavier - persuasion that might be necessary, depending on major-conference schools' interest in hiring Miller.
For Bobinski, it shouldn't be a very hard sell. Miller, 38, enjoys coaching at XU and says he has envisioned himself coaching here long-term, perhaps rearing his three young sons in Cincinnati.

Miller staying, Tubby going
XU coach gets extension while Smith's off to Minnesota
BY DUSTIN DOW | [email protected]

Sean Miller is staying at Xavier.
And in Lexington, it's bye-bye, Tubby Smith.
Miller, the Musketeers' basketball coach, signed a contract extension Thursday that lasts through the 2015-16 season and makes him the highest-paid coach in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

"It was our intention to have him positioned at the top of the league," Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski said.
Miller, 38, has won 63 games in three seasons at Xavier and led the Musketeers to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, almost pulling off an upset Saturday of No. 1 seed Ohio State.

Miller's deal is A-10's richest

Xavier got the commitment from Sean Miller Thursday that it didn't get from Thad Matta three years ago.
Miller, whose name has been linked in the past week to open coaching jobs at Minnesota, Michigan and South Florida, signed a new contract with Xavier Thursday that lasts through the 2015-16 season.
Xavier did not disclose the terms, but athletic director Mike Bobinski confirmed that the new deal made Miller the highest-paid coach in the Atlantic 10 Conference, which was one of Bobinski's goals when he began working on the deal last month. That would put Miller's annual salary somewhere in the range of $700,000-$900,000, depending on incentives.

XU signs Miller for 10 years
Coach's extension raises his pay to $1 million-a-year range
BY DUSTIN DOW | [email protected]

Xavier and men's basketball coach Sean Miller agreed to a 10-year contract extension Wednesday, increasing the coach's annual compensation toward seven figures.
Xavier officials, including university president Michael Graham, S.J., had hoped to push Miller's contract into the range of $1 million a year to secure him at XU in the midst of annual coaching changes throughout college basketball. Miller had been mentioned as a potential candidate for several recent openings, including Indiana.
His new contract is worth a total compensation value of just less than $1 million per year with a base salary between $700,000 and $800,000.

Miller had been making a base salary between $500,000 and $600,000 with a total compensation value - including perks such as a country club membership and a vehicle - of about $800,000.
Miller first came to Xavier in 2001-02 to be an associate head coach under Thad Matta. Two days after Matta left for Ohio State in July 2004, Miller took over as head coach with a base salary of $329,460.

Sean Miller's name has surfaced in connection with the sudden vacancy at Maryland, and one report says there is "mutual interest" between the two.The Washington Post quoted sources with connections to either the school or coach in saying Miller and Maryland had interest in each other. The Post also said Maryland AD Kevin Anderson was expected to travel to speak with Miller about the opening.

Miller is in Tucson this weekend hosting two top-tier recruits: Guard Chris Thomas of the class of 2013 is scheduled to visit today and 2012 guard Shabazz Muhammad is scheduled to arrive Saturday evening.
Miller has not been available for comment and UA athletic director Greg Byrne declined to comment.
Byrne is believed to have a tentative extension for Miller already in the works, and subject to approval by the Arizona Board of Regents next month. Miller was promised a two-year extension of his $2 million annual deal when he signed a five-year contract for Arizona in 2009.
Other candidates Maryland is considering to replace the retiring Gary Williams include Notre Dame's Mike Brey, Villanova's Jay Wright and Pitt's Jamie Dixon.

Maybe this is just me, but I don't see why a head coach at Arizona, Villanova or Pittsburgh would regard Maryland as a step up.
This. Arizona is a nice program with pretty good tradition in a conference that is usually there for their taking. Go to Maryland and you have to compete with UNC and dook every year. Best hope is to be the 3rd best team in your conference most of the time. Seems like a step backwards unless they're offering a boat load more $$$.

Maybe it's the weather:confused: I really have no idea except that might bring them a little closer to home plus the ACC has more tradition than the Pac-10 (12) and while the recruiting is good in Arizona you are really close to top notch kids in the DC area. Plus, I'm sure money is a big factor and maybe he won't go to Maryland.

I think money is first while prestigious basketball conference and fertile recruiting ground have consideration. PAC-10/12 is pretty weak.. then again I'm not sure why Herb Sendeck went from NCST to ASU .

Sendek's departure from Raleigh was not a Sendek decision.
