I am about to upgrade my desktops ram to either 1gbx2 or 2gbX2.. I am wondering if someone would be so kind to tell me what specs are important when shopping for ram. It is primarily used for games, music, and movies. greenies to whoever helps.

Just check to see if your's is dual channel or not.

You can get the shit cheap online especially like newegg.com or someplace like that.

Do you know what motherboard is in your computer, CPU, etc ...? Is it custom built or a prefab Dell type thing? Without knowing the specifics of your computer it's impossible to know the specs of the RAM you need, because it is now manufactured in dozens of different speeds with hundreds of different timings.

Computer question: Bear with me as I don't know a ton about computers. My PC is about 13 months old and has 1 GB of RAM, but I have always had a problem with my "system resources". Everytime that I run a video, play music through iTunes or download something while surfing the internet, I get a pop-up message that says my system resources are running low. I am not doing all of these operations at once (two tasks running at the same time at the most). I do not believe I have a virus or spyware problem as I run my anti-virus/spyware removal software weekly. I would have thought 1 GB is plenty RAM for what I do, but should I consider upgrading to 2 GB's? Thanks in advance for your help!

I'll never discourage someone from adding RAM to their computer. Its like putting rocket fuel in your Motorcycle's gas tank.

However, as BMax said, run the resource manager while you're running these programs, click on the applications tab and sort by CPU usage. This will give you an idea of what applications and processes are eating up the most of your resources.

There are processes and applications that run all the time you can disable that can free up resources, but only do that if you know what you're doing. You can shut off a process that Windows needs to remain open and, well, you can guess what will happen. If I get a chance tomorrow, I'll provide a list of things that XP always has running that aren't necessary and are absolute memory hogs. Shutting these off is not permanent. They will restart when the PC does on a fresh boot. You'd only be shutting them off for that session.

There is also a way to set up system profiles for shutting off and leaving active certain apps and processes that fit your needs. I can get into that too if you'd like.

Defragging and Scan Disk can also help the RAM you have operate more effeciently.
