QB Kyle McCord (transfer to Syracuse)

The OL is the only question mark on the team now IMO. We haven't had a bad QB since Coach Day has been here and we have two top flight 5 stars looking to be starter. I also feel great about our Secondary now too with the portal additions.

So like you said it's on the OL now. I think this is going to be a good offensive line (with that's returning how can it not?) but the real question is can we go from good to great? We dont need to be Moore award winners with the offensive skill we have but they've got to be able to hold their own vs the Penn States and Michigan's of the college football world (especially vs a team like Georgia or Alabama if we were to get in the playoffs).
We will find out...sometimes a new position coach will really exert his influence in year 2

I have a ton of faith in McCord if the OL does their job as mentioned. He was great in HS and the mobility he has is going to surprise some folks on top of his arm. I hate to make the comparison, but he reminds me a ton of Baker Mayfield at OU. Throw on the fact that he was MH Jr's QB for so many years and I'm pretty damn confident he wins the job this year, but Brown will definitely battle him.

For Kyle's sake, I certainly hope not.
Well, to be fair, on the field Baker was incredible at OU. Last two years there:

*2016 Oklahoma Big 12 JR QB 13 254 358 70.9 3965 11.1 12.3 40 8 196.4
*2017 Oklahoma Big 12 SR QB 14 285 404 70.5 4627 11.5 12.9 43 6 198.9
Now I'm no Mayfield apologist by any means but if Kyle does anything near those stats we're winning at least one Natty. What impresses me the most is improvement in every single area except the completion % SR year which was stupid close to the year before and still over 70. Yeah, I'll take that for sure.

I was trying to find an OSU QB comp and had to bring myself to reference Baker...the play style and potential production anyways, I hope he doesn't turn into a toolbag like Baker obviously.

See the above haha, I just mean the athletic 6'3 QB with a ton of weapons around him. I disdain Baker on a personal level, so I hope the comparison ends there (and with a Heisman, but I digress).

That's a bingo. If Kyle is around those figures the next couple of years, we will be ecstatic. Of course he has step on the field and do it, but he just hasn't had a chance yet with the talent that has been ahead of him. I think fans are going to be very happy with Kyle and it might have been the best thing for him to learn behind Stroud over time. Can't wait to see him sling it in the Spring Game.

My issue isn't the stats. Those are one thing, especially when you consider the comparison to the offensive talent Baker had around him.

I watched every game of Mayfield's at Oklahoma, and goes without saying, everyone while he was in Cleveland. My response was based on a couple things.

- The lack of development from 2016 to Baker's final season in 2017. And I'm aware of his numbers being slightly better in his Heisman season, that isn't in question here. The weakness(es) in his game that were present in his first year starting, were not improved upon in the least during his 2nd (heisman) season and followed him all the way into the NFL where they tend to showed up at various points in almost every game. (The win over the Raiders his first start in L.A. was a fluke)

- Erratic ball placement. Yes, I'm aware of the completion percentage. However completion % does not = accuracy. Otherwise Graham Harrell would have been a pro-bowl player out of Texas Tech.

- Height. Baker isn't even quite 6'1. I saw him more than a few times in training camp and I'm checked in almost spot on at 5'11. McCord being a solid 6'3, let's even say by media guide bias that's 6'2 with some change, gives him a significant advantage in his throwing platform(s) from tighter spaces.

Now, would I love for Kyle to put up those types of numbers that have been listed? Sure, because that would probably mean the Bucks are contending and possibly winning a natty. But as Oklahoma State and ultimately Georgia revealed, Mayfield was very much elevated by the talent around him and not vice-versa. I have hope and trust, given what I've seen with Day and Stroud, that our HC is capable of developing NFL worthy passers. THAT is what I want to see done, because if it is then the wins and titles will follow.

All will relate to how each QB moves the team down the field, and scores in the red zone. With the WRs on the field, all it's gonna take is the OL to hold them off for 3 or so seconds. Same with the RBs. Hit the holes and go for a bunch. That will give whomever is QB1 a better chance to make a play. Do like that with two 'experienced' QBs, there will probably be more times the QB takes off. Day really couldn't risk CJ that way. Predicted that CJ'd run more in game with GA, and so it was. Mostly, believe we'll put up points, hopefully the D will stiffle the opponents offense enough.

Can't say I watched Baker that much at OU, but watched him a decent bit there and in Cleveland, which admittedly was pretty bad and he was incredibly erratic with his ball placement in Cleveland from what I saw...just at the college level I thought he was pretty damn good and the overall athleticism and movement in the pocket (and escaping it) reminded me of Baker at OU. On the height, for some reason I thought Baker and Kyle looked pretty identical, but haven't seen either in person I suppose. But as you said, we would love the similar college stats and I think he will have every chance to do so with who we have coming back, and our offensive staff.

And the cool thing here is that McCord and MH Jr have plenty of history together, Kyle is going to be throwing his way a lot in '23 (I know whoever the starting QB will regardless, but I like that McCord and MH Jr played together in HS and were pretty dominant). That and one more year of development in our system is going to be a significant leg up to win the job imo, though Brown is going to give Kyle all the competition he can handle. I just hope both QBs are on our roster this year, I think they will be but you never know anymore, especially at QB.

I'll just speculate that if Brown is named QB1, McCord will be gone. He has "sat" 2 years already waiting his turn, he'll be a Junior. I can't see him staying to be QB2 behind a Sophomore, etc.
