Faces in the Crowd

After all of the excitement from Saturday night calmed down, a good friend of the HuddlePass family wanted me to take a look at some of the important fans who were in the stands to watch the Buckeyes beat Wisconsin. We all know that recruiting is the name of the game in college football and although we don’t usually analyze recruits, I thought it was interesting and wanted to share it with our Buckeye Huddle. I’m sure all of you out there know a few of these names.

Urban Meyer does one thing better than any other coach in the Big Ten: recruit like it’s nobody’s business. Heading into the Wisconsin game the coaches had the red carpet rolled out for recruits and their families. Oh yeah, and LeBron James may or may not have given the pregame speech. One of the smartest moves a coach can do is bring one of the most elite athletes in the world to shake hands and kiss babies. Pure genius move on the part of Urban Meyer for his first game at The Shoe under the lights this season.

Punt Blocks Add Another Weapon to Already-Dangerous Special Teams

I know it’s been a while for most of us here in Columbus since we’ve heard this saying—“Punt is the most important play in football.” Although Urban Meyer realizes the importance of these plays, it isn’t with the same mind set as our guy Jimmy T. I was thinking back on the game against Northwestern, and although this wasn’t the deciding factor in our win—it is a huge play that helped put us in position for that win. I don’t have the coaches’ video of this play, but ESPN had a great view from the end zone that I just got done watching and wanted to share with you how and why we were able to get that change of momentum.

First off—I hate the punt formation that a lot of college teams are going to nowadays. I don’t see the point in letting a guy get a 5-yard running start at you before trying to block him. Just like the NFL does, line your guys up at the LOS and let them get hands on defenders right away. If everyone on the punt team picks out a defender to block then there is less confusion. Having three personal protectors 6 yards off the ball makes zero sense to me and I’m surprised we don’t see more blocked punts in the college game due to this.

Back to Business

Going into the “half way” point of the season undefeated makes for a happy coaching staff, and having a relaxing bye week makes for an energized team. But it’s back to the grind now with the Iowa Hawkeyes coming to town this Saturday. There isn’t much to go off of with no game this past Saturday, but it got me to thinking about what it was going to take to come out off a bye and get back into the swing of things. I’ll be honest; I don’t know much about Iowa this year except that a decent Northern Illinois team beat them to start the year. They did go on a little winning streak after the opener and after losing to Michigan State last week bringing a 4-2 record to Columbus this weekend. What is it going to take to make sure Iowa leaves Columbus 4-3?

The first thing I thought of when going over this game is that our defense should probably just take a look at the game plan they had against Wisconsin. All anyone talked about was how our defense needed to stop the run. They did a very good job of that, and from what film I could see, they did that by keeping 7-8 guys in the box. What is this so-called box?? The box is basically the area of the defense that our d-lineman and linebackers start the play from.

The Art of Play Action

“How was he so wide open?”---This is a question asked by my fiancée and many Ohio State and Iowa fans, during the first half of the game this past Saturday. A simple—the-play-action-mad-the-backside-safety-come-down-hill didn’t suffice as an answer to my bride to be! I did my best to lay it out for her without getting a pen and paper out, but now she will be able to see what I was talking about through HuddlePass.

First off, I will say this play was set up by the run game. It didn’t hurt that the speedster Dontre Wilson was in at tailback --you better believe Iowa defenders knew that they did not want him turning the corner and getting up field. Having such a powerful run game going into this game is something Iowa defenders had on their minds and wanted to come out and shut down from the start.

Another Weapon for High Powered Offense Emerges

Ohio State went in to West Lafayette and took care of business as everyone thought we would this past Saturday. A fast start from the defense and the use of a whole new weapon for Braxton Miller helped put up 21 points before you could even blink. This new weapon isn’t someone that hasn’t played, but someone that we’ve heard a lot about and have just been waiting for him to emerge. No, it’s not speedster Dontre Wilson. I’m not even going to talk about Ezekiel Elliot (who is going to be beast)….I’m talking about the one and only Jeff Heuerman. I’m going to break down the first touchdown he and Braxton hooked up for early in the game to set the tone.

Zwick goes in-depth about his experience at Ohio State (including his recruitment) and the QB competition with Smith. The overall theme is that they seem to handle the QB competitions significantly better nowadays compared to what he went through, which included significant tension with Smith at times.
