QB Julian "Just" Sayin (Official Thread)

Speaking from the perspective as a community.

Like the kids talent, but concerned OSU is bringing in another player (yes, OSU has had players like that) who won't embrace tradition, and give a little extra. The "soft" template that has been a constant criticism under Day. Also, will this kid be on the next train out of Cbus, at the faintest whiff of trouble. Yep.... The world has changed, but there is also risk with the change.

The risk is betting on this kid, knowing that Air, Brown and LK may ship out after spring camp.

Is this kid worth it?

He better be.
None of those guys are worth betting everything on, including Julian. The cream will rise, and they currently have no QBs ready to go. Their best option is a somewhat good but imperfect transfer QB who has no time in BoB's system.

The actual bet was on Quinn and Dylan and not taking others in different classes. Quinn was certainly worth the risk, it just backfired.

Hey I get it. I am embracing the new Ryan Day, but with this particular recruit I have concerns. But, let's see how it plays out.

I don't see any reason Noland and Sayin shouldn't battle it out. It's not like the loser of that battle will be without options, and both will be paid all along the way. The best invite the challenge.

This. We might lose Kienholz and Brown in the short term, but... they had their opportunities.
Maybe they were let down by Corey.
We get Spring and Fall to see who wins the competition to be #2 behind Howard. Steel sharpens steel.
It's official. He's a Buckeye.
I completely understand stockpiling talent, I'm just not sure how I feel about this one or really understand the reasoning behind it.

Think of it like Haskins and Burrow. We will only get to keep 1, but hopefully they will compete in the Spring and Fall to be the backup. If we're lucky, the competition will run through 2025 Spring.

Yeah so not only does that really go against the spirit of competition, it COMPLETELY ignores the objective reality of what college football is these days.

Like it or not, the world we live in means you stack talent upon talent upon talent and hope that they stick around along enough to contribute. IF they don't, you go stack more talent. ANYTHING else and you're behind the 8ball.

Like it or not, Ohio State is now behind the 8 ball on the field when it comes to scUM (cheaters) and the rest of the CFB elite.

You all wanted Day to do something. So he shook the tree, got rid of the deadweight and brought in absolute STUDS. And it's still somehow not good enough. Stop moving the goalposts already and just accept reality.

Everyone has concerns in this era. The riskiest thing to do would be to pass on Julian.

It would be a little different situation next offseason, if Kyle had worked out, and was going pro after 2024. Lincoln would have 2 years, Air 1. Both would be vital from a physical and comfort standpoint. They would be more usable QBs heading into 2025.

As it stands, unless Devin can stay healthy and progress, there are no reliable backups on the roster. Heck, there's not really a reliable starter on the roster, since he has no experience in this system and has some things to improve upon.

True frosh Julian is not a safe bet either. He's a correction for the dropoff in recruiting between Stroud and Air.

And bringing in another stud true frosh likely means one of them finds a new home eventually, and is less of a threat to those being recruited behind him. They'll always be thin. Better to risk being thin while very talented.

Let me say what must.....stacking up good-to-great QBs has ALWAYS been Day's plan. Mold their bodies, sharpen their skills, and see which rises to the top. Those that fall short, by either actions or perceptions, transfer, but hey, they take some valuable new skills with them. As we've seen, heck look above at the 2014 QBs Jwin posted, and after two went down with injuries, the third stringer won tOSU's last Nati, no? Fortunately, no one poached one of the three, which would have been disasterous. tOSU isn't the first team to have two QB studs in the same class, and to be a successful QB, one has to have an overflowing cup of confidence. Guess we'll see, and firmly believe that any of the four will be better than Raiola in the end. The shelf life of a college player is extremely limited, and with the ultimate goal of a spot on an NFL team, they have to maximize their potential sooner than later. Haskins won the competition by an eyelash, and went on to have a tremendous year. By that time, Burrow had taken his leave to LSU, where he had a so-so year. But then he went on to win everything the next year didn't he? Did Day's crystal ball work, or not? It'll work out, I believe, but might cause we BPers some anguish along the way. Go Bucks!

This is just how the current climate of college football is, and it will probably get "worse" if anything when it comes to guys transferring like crazy and the major players ponying up huge money to stay in the race. I'm glad we are stepping up and playing the game that has to be played in the current climate to stay near the top.

I'm all about it, Day has been making all the right moves this offseason. Absolutely savage and calculated. I've been asking for it, and he's doing it. Zero complaints.

My only very mild concern is the locker room dynamic here. At positions with rotation being a constant, that's one thing. At QB, it's one guy and especially when they're both 5 stars in the same class. There's no way in the world you pass on Sayin, but it's something to monitor going forward. Probably not this year, but next.
