QB Dwayne Haskins Jr. (All B1G, B1G OPOY, Silver Football, Rose Bowl MVP, R.I.P.)

Mind of Mike
Class of 2016 four-star quarterback Dwayne Haskins Jr. of Potomac (Md.) Bullis School already has offers from coast-to-coast. While Ohio State, Penn State and Texas A&M are usually mentioned with Haskins, another school should not be ignored. Haskins grew up in New Jersey and has long been very familiar with the Rutgers program. It also doesn't hurt that his uncle is Mohamed Sanu, who played at Rutgers and is currently on the Cincinnati Bengals. On top of that, Haskins is also very familiar with two of the early 2016 commitments for Rutgers, Mohamed Jabbie and Jonathan Pollock, plus is related to another four-star recruit, Jovani Haskins of Bergenfield, N.J. While I'm not saying that he will end up at Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights should not be overlooked when it comes to Haskins' recruiting process, especially considering how much Haskins Jr. tweets about the Scarlet Knights. Ohio State is rumored to be the favorite, however, and it will obviously be tough to beat if that's the case.

HASKINS TO PENN STATE CRYSTAL BALL PREDICTION/EXPLANATION
Earlier today, I made a switch to my 247Sports.com "Crystal Ball" for another 2016 quarterback, Dwayne Haskins, Jr. Initially I, like most others, had Haskins pegged for Ohio State in part to his long time affection for the Buckeyes, feedback from his visits to Columbus and his overall fit in the Ohio State offense.

After doing some research and yes, a gut feeling, I've changed my prediction on Haskins and think he'll end up at Penn State. I'll admit that some of my feelings on this matter are related to Haskins recent — and repeated — interaction with Penn State commitments in 2015 and their targets beyond it. Although he was only offered by Penn State two weeks ago, the Nittany Lions impact in the DMV is now, and has always been, hard to ignore. Does this mean that I think Ohio State is "getting beat" for Haskins? Not necessarily. Doing a little digging into things has me feeling, for the first time, that perhaps Haskins isn't the top priority at quarterback for 2016, even if he's in the top two. As I said last week, this could be a "who wants it first" type of proposition.

Yet another VERY impressive film and one I had been waiting for. Incredible anticipation and advanced ball placement...really tight windows he is throwing into and makes every throw on the field. Looks like he might have grown a tad and his arm strength is improved. Throws very well on the run and properly squares his shoulders to his target. The only minus to his game is that he is not at all dangerous with his legs. I would say his mechanics are ahead of Guarantan but Guarantano is the far superior athlete...plus Gurantano's mechanical flaws are fairly minor. I still give my slight preference to Guarantano but Haskins would be FAR from a consolation prize...I honestly think he looks like a JT Barrett incarnate with slightly better arm strength and slightly less ability with his legs. And I think he has the ability to have similar results at the next level as JT.

Honestly the staff has a really tough call to make here. Guarantano's improvement was more noticeable than Haskins improvement from sophmore to junior year. I'm still leaning Haskins because he just has so many elite passing qualities at such a young age that it's just too hard to pass up. You can't put a value on ball placement, reading defenses and playing out fakes like he does. He's so polished that he brings instant value to a program because he's prepared himself so well. I see a whole different level of JT Barrett. Probably one of the top QB videos I've ever seen. His ball placement is so good that his receivers seem to accelerate through the catch. His mannerisms honestly remind me of Peyton Manning, in how he carries out his fakes, and how quick his footwork is getting ready to throw. The QB's job is to distribute the football and I don't see a better prospect at doing so in the country. The way he's going to freeze defenses with his fakes and distribute the ball to so many receivers is going to have defensive players staring at each other not knowing how to stop it.

Think I like Guarantano better. Haskins looks really uncomfortable running the ball and Urban's offense operates so much better with a legit running threat at QB. Changes all the numbers for the opposing defense. Wouldn't complain about landing Haskins obviously and he's probably a safer bet than Guarantano, but seems like there's more upside to the offense with JG.

He's going to have the best OL and RB in the country not really concerned with how we'll run the ball. We want someone who distributes the ball and keeps the defense from being able to bring defenders in the box against the run.

Agree to disagree. I think Guarantano is plenty good enough to keep defenders honest with his passing (love his release and potential, though admittedly Haskins is more advanced).

The threat of the QB makes it quite a bit easier for the RB and some of the scrambles by Cardale Jones/JT Barrett this season were absolutely crucial to pick up first downs and keep drives moving. Guarantano potentially gives you the best of both worlds. Not saying we wouldn't also have a very good offense with Haskins (or another QB who wasn't much of a runner), but the running QB provides a ton of advantages.

Dominant OL, deep stable of talented RBs, skilled TEs, hybrid weapons, stud WRs, passing QB and even if you stop all that for 3 downs, to have a guy who can scramble for the 1st on top of everything else can take the offense to an even higher level going forward.

(FWIW, I don't think we need a "run first" type of QB who is a mediocre passer. Ideally, we want a pass first QB who is also a good runner. I think Jones, Barrett, Collier and Burrow all fit that mold. Braxton has been working in that direction and Gibson could get there in a few years.)
