PG Demetrius "Meechie" Johnson, Jr. (transfer back to tOSU)

OHIO STATE: MEECHIE JOHNSON JR.

Ohio State added Jamari Wheeler and Cedric Russell to add a veteran presence to their backcourt, but Meechie Johnson is poised to make a big jump. He only played in 17 games last year and his statistical impact was pretty marginal, but that was expected because he was an early enrollee. Duane Washington's 13.5 shots and 16.4 points per game won't replace themselves, and the former 4-star guard can provide some shot-making that this backcourt needs. Plus, Russell will likely play a lot at the 2 and Wheeler has never been much of an offensive threat throughout his career at Penn State. If Johnson can compete admirably on the defensive end, he'll beat out Wheeler for the most important minutes because he can stretch the floor with the best of them. And I also really liked his playmaking abilities even in limited playing time last year.

Johnson dealt with a leg injury in the preseason, but those scares seem to be behind him. Buy stock now.

“I had a little injury the past two weeks I was dealing with, nothing major,” Johnson said, via Bucknuts' Patrick Murphy. “I feel great. It was a precautionary thing. I played through it all of last year, all summer. It was just like, Coach said they’re going to need me this year to be a bigger impact and a role for the team. So it’s best to get to treat it now, do what I can now, attack it so it don’t linger throughout the season and now I’m missing time this season. So it was nothing crazy.”

Background
A native of Garfield Heights, Ohio, Johnson followed a winding path that led him to Ohio State. As a sophomore who averaged 23 points per game, he suffered a significant injury to his right knee while playing in the final game of the regular season. The diagnosis was a torn ACL and MCL, and it would require a rehab process that would keep him off the court for his entire junior season. That year, he transferred to the Osborne Academy in nearby Willoughby, Ohio, where he worked his way back from the injury in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"He's taking steps forward," Holtmann told hosts Paul Keels and Ron Stokes. "He got injured in practice, got hit in his face by I believe it was a forearm or an elbow. And I think he's making strides.

"It was just a simple rebounding drill with two guys. It was almost coincidental, just two kind of guys came together."

Meechie Johnson close to returning from injury

Ohio State second-year guard Meechie Johnson Jr. has missed three games with a facial injury suffered during a Jan. 11 practice. Holtmann said Johnson suffered a facial fracture and concussion but that he’s getting closer to returning to action.

“I think contact is the next step for him,” he said. “We’ll get the final word today on what he’s able to do. He is going to wear a mask. He looks like a villain, which I like it. It gives him a nastiness to him. It’s an interesting thing he’s got to wear. I think it affects his breathing as much as anything, but we haven’t had a chance to play enough to see how it’s going to affect his vision.”

Holtmann has said that once Johnson is back to full participation in practice, he can return to game action.
