Future rivals were among the best quarterbacks on Tuesday night at the Elite 11 Pro Day competition. Ohio State commit Kyle McCord and Michigan pledge J.J. McCarthy will be linked together for many years to come as the two fan bases argue over which of their guys is better.

On Tuesday night, it was Kyle McCord taking home the simulated Pro Day competition at the Elite 11 camp in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Both prospects are highly rated and both lived up to their billing with strong performances.

BuckeyeScoop.com was on hand and shot video of every throw the two players made during the competition.

EVERYTHING'S MADE UP AND THE EVENT DOESN'T MATTER. I've been back from my mini-honeymoon for a few brief hours but – much to my fresh wife's dismay – that's all the time I needed to find something to make me mad online.

Folks, the Elite 11 Finals is a sham!!!!!!!!!

This "competition" just crowned a dude who didn't finish in the top-10 of two of the three events its champion basically because Trent Dilfer thought he did well in some random high school football games 10 months ago.





Apparently this is how it's always been done and nobody's ever seemed to notice, but that's probably because they've never before awarded the thing to someone who very clearly did not deserve it.

I very much understand that this barely matters in the grand scheme of things, but that doesn't mean it isn't stupid as hell. Imagine the Olympics dishing out gold medals based 50 percent on how you ran a year ago.

But even if I did think this was a perfectly reasonable way to decide a winner, there's just no way his junior tape was that much better than the other six five-star quarterbacks at the event, because if you've ever watched a five-star quarterback in high school, they all look like the best quarterback you've ever seen with your eyes.

It seems they just decided Caleb Williams was going to win, and the competition just didn't matter at all. Then, they rationalized it however they saw fit. It's bullshit, but it's even more bullshit that they're continuing to insist that it isn't bullshit.

Oh well. At least Kyle McCord proved he's good at football, actually!

The Elite 11 Finals are over, and while we wait for the updated recruiting rankings, the analysts over at 247Sports have come up with a list of their own after watching the three-day event and “taking a thorough look at each quarterback”. Here’s what they had to say about Ohio State five-star commit Kyle McCord, who they have ranked No. 5.

“Kyle McCord scored a 45 during his pro day. That was the highest mark out of the 20 attendees. The Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph’s product also held his own during the accuracy gauntlet as he was precise and confident with his decisions. The ball in a way just seems to jump out of McCord’s hands which is a trait that we like, a lot. We also how it never feels like he’s forcing anything. The No. 3 ranked pro-style passer is set to spend the next couple years in Columbus with Ryan Day.”

McCord went into the competition ranked No. 8 by the Elite 11 coaching staff, and No. 3 pro-style QB by 247Sports’ Composite rankings. After a rocky start on the first day (Monday), he bounced back and earned himself a score of 45 on Tuesday— just five points short of the all-time Elite 11 Pro Day record holder, Ohio State freshman quarterback CJ Stroud.

After his performance on Day 2, another observer told 247Sports that “his deep balls...were over his receiver’s shoulder and hit them in stride. There is very little chance the defender can make a play on those passes. In general, after the first three or four throws, he was as sharp as just about anybody who went through the drill.”

In between winning Elite 11 Pro Days, McCord is recruiting

Speaking of McCord, he’s been doing some recruiting of his own for the Buckeyes. He told Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts that he (along with his fellow Buckeye 2021 commits) is going after wide receiver target Emeka Egbuka, offensive tackle Tristan Leigh and cornerback Jordan Hancock. He notes that Hancock is currently committed to Clemson but they’re “trying to get him to flip because he has some close ties with some of the guys from our recruiting class.”

“We are still going after a few guys but coaches have been, from Day One, really selective about who we want and now that we are on the final stretch it has really dwindled down to just a couple of guys we are going after.”

McCord was one of the top performers throughout the week, taking home the Pro Day Competition win on Tuesday night.

The Elite 11 staff is loaded with former quarterbacks and gurus, including Quincy Avery. Avery has trained several former and current Ohio State quarterbacks, including Dwayne Haskins, C.J. Stroud, and Justin Fields. This week, Avery had a chance to observe McCord.

"It was really cool to see Kyle out here as a future quarterback at Ohio State," Avery told BuckeyeScoop.com on Wednesday. "He did a lot of really good things. He displayed a lot of arm talent and his consistency was definitely apparent with his Pro Day run. You definitely understand why Ohio State is so high on him."

McCord is perhaps in a bit of a different mold than some of the recent Ohio State quarterbacks. He is perhaps more Dwayne Haskins than Justin Fields, though McCord has shown to be a more willing runner at the high school level.

Either way, Avery is unconcerned about system fit and feels the Buckeyes have adapted well over the years at the quarterback spot.

"They've had a lot of different guys and I haven't had a chance to watch as much of his high school film to see all of the things he can do athletically," Avery started. "But he has a great build, an imposing figure. If he can add an element in terms of the run game, that puts him in a really good position. He's a really good thrower of the football and expecting him to be as athletic as someone like Justin Fields, that shouldn't be the expectation. But you're getting someone who is really polished."

I heard on Birms, Talking Stuff podcast that the Elite 11 is 25% based on your previous seasons stats. So compared to Caleb Williams, McCord didn't have much of a chance. And thats ok. I can see McCord performing great in Days system, more similar to a Haskins in how the offense will be set up for him

I think he's 100% Crystal Balled to Oklahoma. BTW the whole "fix is in" thing emanated from an allegation that the 50% prior rating+50% camp rating (which would've dropped Williams out of 1st place) was mysteriously changed after the final round to 75% prior + 25% camp which gave it to Williams. After controversy arose 247 Sports said it had always been 75-25.

First time I have listened to Kyle speak but man he is impressive for a 17 year old kid. No wonder he is spearheading our recruiting for this class, who wouldn't want to play with him? Nothing but class and glad to hear he had a good performance at the Elite 11...good to know he played well there but I see him as a kid that needs the pads on to really show out.
