2025 PA DE Zahir Mathis (OSU decommit)

Birm mentioning that Ped St is getting their NIL together to go harder after Mathis. He only sees a flip if Ped St offers a deal so big that OSU doesn't match
Match if they do. We really need this kid in the class after previous DE misses. Side note - are they trying to beat us on individual recruits since they can't beat us on the field?

Silly question. If one ups the NIL ante on a recruit, do the already committed players, compare and then say "hey, you gave X more $ than me, and I'm the more highly rated". Said simply, does the NIL bar go up if a competitive situation between later players cause more NIL to be funneled to the earlier recruits? I can envision where Carter Lowe is getting some higher/better offers now, than when he originally recruited. Just an idle musing...

No way to honestly answer that question. but I'm sure a number of factors apply. If a guy gets a ratings bump, he could re negotiate, I'm sure. But there gets to a point when there's only so much re-negotiating you can keep doing. None of this is any different than anyone negotiating a contract with a company. You can re-negotiate if you've received a better offer from another company, but there's only so many negotiations before a company rescinds their offer. Carter Lowe may get better offers, but he may just want to be a Buckeye, just like someone may want to work for Charles Schwab over Fidelity, even if Fidelity offers them a larger deal, but the employee may like the environment at Schwab more.

Zahir Mathis has decommitted from Ohio State.
Mathis announced Monday that he has reopened his recruitment. The four-star defensive end and No. 67 overall recruit in the 2025 class had been committed to the Buckeyes since Jan. 10 and still considers Ohio State “a top school“ in his recruitment.
After much consideration Ive decided to reopen my recruitment and decommit from Ohio State. I appreciate Coach Day, Coach Johnson and all the coaches at Ohio State. They are still a top school for me. This is a life decision. Please respect my decision!

Mathis was in Columbus for an official visit on Oct. 25 when Ohio State defeated Nebraska 21-17. The Philadelphia native also made an official visit to Penn State in June. He returned to State College a month later for the Lasch Bash, a barbeque event the Nittany Lions invited 2025, 2026 and 2027 prospects to attend.
Before committing to Ohio State, Mathis had a top five that also included Florida State, Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina. This fall, Miami and Texas A&M attempted to get Mathis on campus, according to Brian Dohn of 247Sports.
With Mathis’ decommitment, Ohio State is down to five defensive linemen commits in the 2025 class: Zion Grady, Trajen Odom, Jarquez Carter, Maxwell Roy and London Merritt.
Merritt has visited Colorado twice this season, so that could be a situation worth watching.

And so the Mandala spins once again. Agree with pnut, certainly, about the renegotiation thing, and yes, the initial take is that if you've got two offers, it's great to pit the two against each other. Probably the best time to improve your paycheck, and certainly, if it becomes a back and forth, one will drop out, leaving you with the best (?) offer on the table. Hopefully, one gets their best 'fit', as well as the best paycheck. Twice, I took the higher offer, and twice regretting my choice only a few months into it. There's more fish in the sea, and maybe this will help CJ Hicks stay around, at DE. One door shuts, another door opens...Go Bucks! Finish strong.

From a poster at Ped St On3 site:
Couple things here:
1) This isn't a case of him backing out with another destination in mind. I feel like they went to OSU with some expectations and OSU called a bluff. Now things are wide open.
2) Penn State really hasn't been recruiting Zahir for a while. Maybe it's a conversation they'll circle back around on eventually, but the two sides went separate ways in October and haven't really come back around. Penn State went to see him play when they went to see Jabree Wallace-Coleman and weren't crazy about Mathis. Penn State also has a bunch of defensive ends in the class and feels fine about where it stands. Still looking for a defensive tackle.
3) I do think PSU was used as leverage in this one, and circle back to No. 1 for the result. I don't think Penn State is crazy about Mathis in a sense that they'll overextend themselves on this one. I also don't get the sense that OSU is completely out, but the Buckeyes are in the same boat. My thought process goes to whether or not OSU goes after Chaz Coleman now. No word on that yet.

4) I wouldn't be shocked if the next move for Mathis is visits to random places. Like, schools that haven't even been mentioned to date with Mathis.

5) I also get the sense that there's a difference between perceived value on both sides of this. Penn State and Ohio State don't feel they need to budge, and we'll see if another program decides that it wants to

Well, that one stings. I know that there is likely NIL money at play, etc. but it doesn't change that he is a talent and really need elite DEs in this class. Don't get me wrong, Grady and Merritt are extremely good, but we needed one more and there's no guarantee that they will stick with us either (it is now imperative to keep them both). Seems to be a recurring theme that DE recruiting wanes late in the cycle for whatever reason, but hopefully we can secure a good replacement for Mathis' spot.
