College commitments
BY TOM GROESCHEN | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Alex Wimmers, a senior baseball pitcher/infielder at Moeller, has given an oral commitment to Ohio State. Wimmers last season was 5-3 with a 1.53 ERA, with 63 strikeouts in 51 innings. He also batted .473 with 21 RBI. He was co-player of the year in the Greater Catholic League South.

Congrats to Alex Wimmers on becoming the first player to be named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year in consecutive seasons.

The only other player to win the award twice was Buckeye Justin Fry, who won it in '97 and '99.

Wimmers Repeats as Pitcher of the Year

Despite battling a hamstring injury and missing four weeks at the tail end of the season, Wimmers posted a 9-0 record with a 1.60 earned-run average over 10 starts. The Cincinnati native gave up just 58 hits and struck out 86 batters over 73 innings pitched. Opposing batters hit just .218 off Wimmers and he tossed two complete game victories against Indiana and Penn State, striking out 25 over those two contests.

MLB Fanhouse projects Wimmers #12 overall to the Reds:

MLB Mock Draft 2.0: The Full First Round -- MLB FanHouse

<LI class=reds>12. Reds | Alex Wimmers (RHP) | Ohio State
After the success of Mike Leake last year, Wimmers is a logical pick here. Scouts love his secondary offerings and command. He's not Leake, but he is very, very good. Cincinnati has been high on him all spring and is looking to sign a player for slot. He fits that bill, as would Yasmani Grandal, who they have also shown heavy interest in.

Twins No. 1 draft pick Alex Wimmers talks, Bob Sansevere listens
Pioneer Press
Updated: 06/13/2010

The best day of my life had to be draft day. It was a huge relief to be drafted by the Twins in the first round. Not a lot of people get the opportunity to be a professional baseball player. It was the most satisfying feeling I ever had.

I've never had a real job. I've never worked. The only thing I had for a job is I worked a scoreboard for a tournament at a basketball game. I've only worked at baseball. I've worked extremely hard at it.

I'd like to get to the majors as soon as possible ? possibly next year or the year after. I feel like I'm ready already. I feel like I have the stuff to get major league hitters out.

I throw a circle change. I worked on it extremely hard my freshman summer. I found a grip that worked. Sometimes, it will drop like a splitter. Some hitters take some funny hacks at it.

More than likely, I'm going to sign. That's pretty much a no-brainer. I don't really have interest in going back to school (at Ohio State). We're getting a new coach next year and a whole different philosophy.

Props to Alex for this award:osu:
Ohio State junior Alex Wimmers was chosen as the best pitcher in college baseball for the 2010 season by the College Baseball Foundation.

Wimmers, a first-round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins last month, had a 9-0 record with a 1.61 ERA.

This is only the second year for the College Baseball Foundation award; Stephen Strasburg won it last season.

'I miss pitching too much,' top pick Wimmers says upon signing
By JOE CHRISTENSEN, Star Tribune
Last update: August 7, 2010

The Twins signed first-round draft pick Alex Wimmers for $1,332,000 on Friday and assigned the former Ohio State pitcher to Class A Fort Myers.

The signing came 10 days before the deadline for teams to sign their picks. Wimmers, 21, went 9-0 with a 1.60 ERA for the Buckeyes, receiving national Pitcher of the Year honors, and could have returned for his senior season. "I just wanted to get this on the road," the righthander said. "I've had the summer [off], but I miss pitching too much."

Last year, the Twins waited until 10 minutes before the deadline to sign Missouri pitcher Kyle Gibson, whose $1.85 million bonus was higher than Major League Baseball's $1.29 slot recommendation for the No. 22 pick.

The Twins had never gone above the slot for a first-round pick. This year, they toed the line again. Wimmers was the No. 21 pick, and Baseball America estimated MLB's slot recommendation for that pick at exactly $1,332,000.

"I definitely feel I have the stuff to pitch at the major league level," Wimmers said. "We'll have to see how it works out."

The stadium was bigger, the opponents more accomplished and the climate a bit more tropical. But one thing was the same in Alex Wimmers' professional debut -- his father was in the crowd.

Jerry Wimmers watched his son strike out four over 2 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday as the Fort Myers Miracle defeated the Bradenton Marauders, 5-2, to salvage a split of their doubleheader.

"My dad is a huge, huge fan," Alex Wimmers said. "He supports me. Whether it's a bad outing or a good outing, he's there. Every start, he's been there. He's definitely always been my No. 1 fan."

Wimmers was selected 21st overall in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft after becoming the first player to win back-to-back Big Ten Pitcher of the Year awards at Ohio State. He signed with the Twins on Aug. 6 and learned earlier this week that he would finally face Florida State League hitters on Saturday.

"I was never nervous, just anxious to finally get out there," he said. "I'd thrown quite a few bullpen sessions, so it was good to get on the mound."

Once he did, the 21-year-old right-hander used his fastball, curve and changeup to retire the first six batters he faced.

"I started out a little bit shaky," Wimmers said. "I was around the plate a little bit, probably because I was a little anxious."

Wimmers tosses five-no hit frames
First-rounder earns first victory in third professional start

Alex Wimmers has yielded just two hits over 10 2/3 frames as a professional. (Fort Myers Miracle)

Having thrown only 5 2/3 innings as a professional, Fort Myers starter Alex Wimmers had to take a seat after five hitless frames Tuesday.

The 2010 first-round pick struck out six and walked one en route to the Class A Advanced Miracle's 4-1 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals.

"I felt great," Wimmers said. "I could have kept going, but then again I was on a pitch count, 70-75. Once I hit that mark, that was my day."

Wimmers knows how to gauge his tank. As a sophomore at Ohio State in 2009, he tossed the only nine-inning no-hitter in Buckeyes' history and felt nearly as dominant against the Cardinals on Tuesday.

"I couldn't guarantee that I would have thrown a no-hitter," he said, "but I felt I had the stuff that it possibly could happen.

"To look at the long run, the Miracle and the Twins probably felt it is in the best interest of me to stick to the pitch count."

After retiring the side in order in the first inning, Wimmers walked Palm Beach's Alex Castellanos to begin the second frame. The right-hander recorded 10 outs in a row before Ryde Rodriguez reached on a fielding error by third baseman Nicholas Romero in the fifth.

Wimmers wrapped up his third start with six strikeouts to earn his first professional victory.

"My fastball location was my key," he said. "I was able to pinpoint it when I wanted to throw it. My changeup was working as well."

Miracle's Alex Wimmers named Florida State League Player of Week
Posted September 8, 2010

The Florida State League announced today that Fort Myers Miracle pitcher Alex Wimmers has been named Player of the Week for Aug. 30-Sept. 5.

The 21-year-old Cincinnati native started two games last week, and recorded two wins. In 10 innings he gave up four hits, one earned run, two walks and struck out 15 batters.

Wimmers was the Minnesota Twins' 2010 first-round draft pick from Ohio State University.

After signing and joining the Miracle on Aug. 9, he pitched 15 2/3 innings, allowing only one run, while striking out 23 batters. He finished 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA in four starts.

In Twins system, Wimmers all about team
First-round pick in this year's Draft learning to hone arsenal
By Doug Miller / MLB.com | 10/02/10

These days, when Alex Wimmers isn't on the field pitching for the Minnesota Twins in Florida's fall instructional league, he's keeping up with the pennant race.

Even a few thousand miles southeast of Target Field, the back fields are abuzz with dreams of a third World Series ring.

"It's awesome," said Wimmers, the 21-year-old right-hander whom the Twins selected with the 21st pick in this year's First-Year Player Draft.

"Everyone in the organization through the Minor Leagues, a lot of the coaches through Single-, Double-A and Triple-A, the field coordinators, everybody ... every day they're talking about it. Hopefully, this will be the year that we can break through the first round."

Wimmers has been in Florida since August. First he had a quick and dominant foray into professional baseball as a starter for the Class A Advanced Fort Myers Miracle, with whom he went 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings over four starts.

Now he's learning the ropes in instructs, where long days and some ups and downs are commonplace but easily understood by a pitcher who says he's eager to soak it all in.

"Right now, I'm focusing mainly on trying to get acquainted with the system and how the Twins do things and learn a lot about my teammates," says Wimmers, a Cincinnati native and two-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Year while at Ohio State.

"It's important to take in how everybody does things and work hard on and off the field without bringing attention to yourself. A lot of it is about doing the little things right because they add up at the end of a season. The little things are what matter."
