OT Josh Fryar (Official Thread)

“His athleticism is what excited me in his recruitment,” Studrawa said. “He was a basketball player, he’s a guy who is 6-foot-5 but has the ability to bend and play really low. Those two things were what intrigued me about him when we first got him in recruiting, and it’s only gotten better through training with [strength coach] Mick [Marotti]. Now he’s getting stronger, he’s got a little edge to him and he’s a guy who has some grit.

“He’s got some toughness, and he shows up every day.”

“I've seen him when he first came in in the summer, when COVID was still around – it's still around, of course, but when it was at its highest peak – and he was doing some stuff that was tremendous,” Munford said at Big Ten Media Days. “So I was like, wow, you actually have a chance to play here. But also, the same time, what are you going to do with it now?”

Apparently Fryar took to those words well.

He showed up in the spring, with Miller out due to injury, and stepped in to take a significant number of first-team reps. Now with everybody healthy, he has shown that he deserves to remain not just in the mix but at the forefront of it.

So, could Munford see Fryar as starting next to him on Sept. 2 when the Buckeyes take on Minnesota?

“100 percent,” Munford said. “The interior part is like wide open, of course, but also at the same time what coach Day has said, it's like who wants it more? If you want to go get it, go get it. It's not just like, oh, we're going to pick the best that we think. Whoever wants it, go get it. Then we decide at the end of camp who's actually earned that spot.”

JOSH FRYAR READY TO PLAY AFTER OFFSEASON RECOVERY FROM TORN ACL: “I DON'T WANT TO SIT BACK AND WAIT”

Josh Fryar knew he had hurt his knee while warming up before Ohio State’s rivalry game at Michigan last season, but he didn’t know until after the game just how badly he had injured it.

Believing he had only suffered a minor injury, Fryar played through the pain and was on the field for each of the Buckeyes’ two field goals and three extra points in their 42-27 loss. He wasn’t going to let a minor injury stop him from playing in The Game.

“I thought it was just like a meniscus or something,” Fryar said of his knee injury. “I wanted to play in the team up north game. That's the game we come here to play for.”

As it turned out, however, Fryar had torn his ACL. That injury would sideline him for the Rose Bowl and the entirety of spring practice. With the help of Ohio State physical therapist Adam Stewart and the rest of the Buckeyes’ medical staff, however, Fryar was able to make an eight-month recovery from that injury and get back on the field for the start of preseason camp last week.

Four practices into preseason camp, Fryar said he is feeling “95%” healthy.

“I think I'm close to getting back (to 100%),” Fryar said Monday. “I just gotta do all the necessary things to get back fully.”

OL JOSH FRYAR
The sixth man on Ohio State’s offensive line played no small role for the Buckeyes a season ago. With 459 snaps logged in 2021, Matt Jones received more than every Ohio State offensive player besides C.J. Stroud and the starting five offensive linemen. Jones will be a regular starter this year, and with the depth of the front line in question, Josh Fryar’s game-readiness will be all the more important.

Fryar has long been considered one of the Buckeyes’ top reserves along the offensive line, but his progress was slowed by a torn ACL suffered in preseason warmups in Ann Arbor toward the end of this past year. Now nearly back to full health, Ohio State will need him more than ever before as the 2022 season begins.

Do we use Josh in a Jumbo package?
Yes he wears #41…but we need to use Dawand in a Jumbo package. If you know what I mean.

Fryar is just a better player. And I honestly believe that if Dawand didn’t start last year, Fryar would be the starter this year. I remember hearing that it was really close between Dawand and Fryar back in August. I think they knew Fryar was better but thought they could still do what they wanted to with Dawand and he would be off to the NFL. Idk, just my thoughts.
