“We have a pretty good record here in front of our crowd,” said Nadine Muzerall. “We’re going to need our crowd to rally us up and get us going and try to get a couple wins here.” A raucous home crowd does seem to make a big difference for the Bucks. They are 10-2-0 at the OSU Ice Rink this season.

The Buckeyes need that home ice boost. They are in dire need of a good result after faltering in Duluth last week. The Bucks were able to put several pucks behind gold medal goalie Maddie Rooney. However, they struggled in their own end without All-American defenseman Jincy Dunne. Ohio State dropped both games of the series to the Bulldogs.

The sweep dealt a huge blow to the team’s postseason hopes. As things stand, in the (rather unlikely) event that there are no upsets in the conference tourneys, the Bucks would earn the last at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. And even that tenuous spot is far from secured.

Muzerall says her team is aware of its situation but can’t get hung up on its missteps. “We know what’s at stake,” the Buckeye coach stated. “We don’t have to keep reminding them. We don’t want to look in that rearview mirror. We have to move forward.”

Some victories over the Gophers this week would go a long way toward shoring up Ohio State’s position. WCHA-leading No. 2 Minnesota ranks first among all D-I teams in offense and second in defense. A win against the Gophers is hard to come by but exceedingly good for the resume.

And the Buckeyes know how to get the job done. They are one of only two teams to defeat the Gophers this season. Back in October, they earned a series split in Minneapolis. Last year Ohio State swept Minnesota in Columbus.

The Bucks are prepared to repeat the feat. “We nailed down some things that we have to do better defensively,” noted Muzerall. “Minnesota has a pretty lethal offense. We’ve got to play defense but we have to make sure we’re attacking offensively too and create some turnovers with our speed and our relentlessness. It’s just a mindset now of buckling down and getting after it.”

SCARLET OUT SATURDAY
The Buckeyes will be sporting their sweet scarlet road jerseys at home on Saturday. Rally towels will be passed out to the first 600 fans in attendance. A postgame skate is scheduled. Fans are requested to come to the game appropriately attired and boisterous.

“We really need you guys,” Muzerall urged. “We need people to be loud and I guess this is your one time to be really obnoxious. And bring kids because they’re always loud and crazy. You have to come with your scarlets on.”

“That’s the whole point of being at home is taking advantage of this rink and this environment and the loyal fans that we have,” she continued. “We’ve got to bring everybody out. Bring out your friends. Bring out your family members. We really need you this weekend.”

HOCKEY BUCKS EXPECT TIGHT, LOW SCORING TILTS AGAINST NOTRE DAME, ST. CLOUD

The Buckeyes are looking to get back on track and snap their five-game losing skid with a good series at St. Cloud State. The Huskies are also hoping to bounce back this week after being swept by Wisconsin in their last outing. The Bucks swept the Huskies last time they met. The games were tight and low scoring which isn’t surprising considering the talent St. Cloud State has in net.

Janine Alder (2.39/.940) and Emma Polusny (3.37/.918) are both highly capable netminders who shoulder a heavy load, night in and night out. They regularly see upwards of 35 shots per game. Last time out against Wisconsin Alder held the Badgers to three goals against on a whopping 53 shots.

Nadine Muzerall says her Buckeyes are aware of the challenge awaiting in the Husky net. “They’re aware of how good St. Cloud’s goaltending is and we’re a team that will win by one or two,” said the coach. “We have to make sure we’re getting our chances and getting shots to the net and crashing...We have to make sure that our shot selection is the right one and that we’re getting plenty on her so we can get those opportunities to bury it.”

Muzerall also addressed the Buckeyes’ goaltending situation in her pre-series comments. “We have faith in our goaltenders and we’ve asked a lot of them,” she noted. “Coming into the season they were all supposed to be back up goalies. Then all of the sudden they have to step up and play and between the three goalies before the season started they only had one game of any experience.”

“We believe in them. Like I said earlier we’re not a team that’s going to get more than one or two goals on board. We have to buckle down defensively and with our goaltending and keep it to zero or one, knowing that we’re going to get to one or two.”

After some late season setbacks, Ohio State looks to close out the regular season with a bang at Wisconsin. The Buckeyes split a series with the top-ranked Badgers in Columbus earlier this year. Andrea Braendli and the OSU defense shut Wisconsin out in the series opener. In the finale the Bucks trailed by a single goal going into the third period but the Badgers prevailed, 5-2.

A good performance in that series gives the Buckeyes confidence that they can repeat or better those results this week. “We’re focusing on a lot of the things that we did well against them last time and the things we need to tighten up on,” said Nadine Muzerall.

“We’re going to make a couple little tweaks and hope we catch them off guard. But we’ve got to believe in ourselves and what we know we’re capable of. We knocked them off once before and we’re looking to do that two more times.”

It’s going to be a tall order for OSU playing in Madison with Wisconsin celebrating its seniors and trying to lock up the regular season WCHA title. The Badgers are also on a roll. They’re 7-1-0 in their last eight games. They outscored their opponents 33-7 over that stretch.

Wisconsin isn’t the only team looking to solidify its conference standing this week. The Buckeyes can clinch third place. They have a four point lead on fourth place Bemidji State and five on fifth place Minnesota-Duluth.

To give you some idea of what difference the seeding could make, third place equals a first round best-of-three WCHA tourney series in Columbus against either St. Cloud or Minnesota State. OSU is 11-5-0 at home and owns a collective 7-1-0 record against the Huskies and Mavericks.

Fourth place means the Buckeyes face either BSU or UMD. Ohio State is only 3-5-0 against those teams this season. It’s unlikely that the Bucks would fall all the way to fifth. Bemidji would have to take five points off Minnesota this week. But it is technically a possibility which would turn that tough BSU/UMD match up into a road series.
