Ohio State Women's Basketball (2023-24 B1G CHAMPS)

Great to see Iowa honor the promised scholarship:

Iowa commit Ava Jones: Felt 'like my dad was with me today'

i

Just over four months after she was severely injured and her father was killed after being struck by a car, Ava Jones signed a national letter of intent for the Iowa women's basketball team Wednesday.

Jones, 17, suffered a traumatic brain injury, torn ligaments in both knees and a shoulder injury when an impaired driver hit her and her family on a Louisville sidewalk July 5, while there for an AAU tournament. Her father, Trey Jones, died a few days later and her mother, Amy Jones, suffered a brain injury and 21 broken bones. Her younger brother, Creek, escaped serious injury.

The driver, Michael Hurley, was indicted by a grand jury in August and charged with one count of murder, two counts of first-degree assault, one count of assault in the fourth degree and one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence. According to the police report, Hurley said he had taken the opioid Hydrocodone before driving.

Jones, a 6-foot-2 forward who was ranked 83rd by ESPN HoopGurlz for the Class of 2023, originally committed to Arizona State but then decommitted in March after coach Charli Turner Thorne retired. Jones reopened her recruiting and announced her commitment to Iowa on July 3, two days before the crash.

Iowa assistant coach Jan Jensen said that there was no hesitation from the university or head coach Lisa Bluder that Jones' scholarship would be honored.

"Coach Bluder said, 'She's a Hawk, she's ours, she's family. She's going to be with us,'" Jensen said by phone Wednesday.

"Once she is here, we'll have her doing every part of the team stuff that she can possibly do. When we're learning the offense, she'll be learning it. We want her to be included in everything."

The Ohio State Buckeyes spent the week talking about their marquee win against the No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers, but Sunday was another game with an opponent who came to play. Boston College is a young team that’s struggled in their 1-1 start to the season but saw a visit from the Buckeyes as a day to step up. Even so, the Scarlet & Gray withstood the pressure and hit another gear, beating the Eagles 82-64.

What’s Next
Ohio State has a chance to avenge its last loss to an in-state university this week. On Thursday, the Buckeyes will travel southeast to Athens, for a game against the Ohio University Bobcats.

Rebeka Mikulášiková’s offseason work leads to strong start

Last season, Ohio State women’s basketball forward Rebeka Mikulášiková was slingshot into a starting role. While a rush of new minutes increased individual stats, and the Buckeyes won a share of the Big Ten regular season title, the Scarlet & Gray struggled in the paint. Now, offseason shifts turned Mikulášiková into a new player and, in turn, the Buckeyes a more formidable team.

Mikulášiková’s in her fourth year, but really the second as a key piece of the Buckeyes’ on-court game plan. The Slovakian made 15 appearances 2020-21 season and none as a starter. Then, key 2021 transfers in forwards Dorka Juhasz and Aliyah Patty moving to UConn and Texas A&M respectively created a Mikulášiková-sized void.

Head coach Kevin McGuff put the forward’s name in the starting five with permanent ink. Mikulášiková started every game of the season, increasing 169 minutes, and reached career highs with 301 points and 159 rebounds.

Even so, the Buckeyes were thin at forward. Mikulášiková and now graduates Braxtin Miller and Tanaya Beacham carried a majority of the load. Teams with powerful inside players like Michigan’s Naz Hillmon and Indiana’s Mackenzie Holmes caused issues for Ohio State, with the Buckeyes losing four games against both conference favorites.

Now two games into the 2022-23 season, things are different. Much different.

Game Preview: No. 8 Ohio State women’s basketball at Ohio University

On Nov. 27, 2020, the Ohio University Bobcats did the unthinkable. With the No. 22 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in town, Ohio pulled off an 86-85 upset to beat the 2018 NCAA Championship winners. The victory wasn’t only a nice moment in team history, but something of the norm when it comes to the Bobcats facing Power Five teams. Thursday, it’s the Ohio State women’s basketball team’s turn to try and buck the trend.

So, how good have the Bobcats been against goliath-sized opponents? In recent years, Ohio’s beat teams like the University of Pittsburgh, Purdue and the Buckeyes themselves. This new phenomenon featured a Nov. 17, 2019 loss for Ohio State when the Bobcats came up to Columbus, Ohio. Even though the Buckeyes have a 20-1 record against the Bobcats, the growth of women’s basketball is beginning to close gaps.

Could Thursday night go the same way?

Preview
Those standout victories, and Ohio State's last in-state loss, have one big difference between the current edition of the Bobcats: It doesn’t include guard Cece Hooks.

Hooks was a revelation in Athens. Out of Dayton, Ohio, the guard ended her career with the Bobcats with her name at or near the top of the program’s record book. The 2021 MAC Player of the Year and four-time First Team All-MAC, MAC Defensive Player of the Year and MAC-All Defensive team member ended her Ohio career leading the team in points, field goals made and steals (and fifth all-time in NCAA history).
