Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

Re Kingsley,
He is still listed on OSU roster for 2023-24,
But has not been playing ITA tournaments apparently competing on pro tour this fall.
Looks like Boulais and Lutschaunig are also skipping ITA events.
Not to belabor this, as it appears that ship has sailed, but cannot Kingsley compete in the pros, as long as he doesn't collect a paycheck? Golfers can compete with the pros, but if they take cash, zip goes their eligibility. Just using logic....which may not belong in college athletics? Tennis team might start to rival synchro swimming someday soon....Go Bucks!
All I know is: Cannon Harold Kingsley is listed as being enrolled at THE Ohio State University as a student this fall.

Student information:
Major: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
College: Arts and Sciences

Kingsley, Boulais and Lutshanig have one more covid year of eligibility left and have expressed intent to return for the spring season, (starts Jan. 2024).
Wrt amateur status, receiving NIL payment and prize money for professional play, not sure what the new rules allow, …
however under previous ncaa regulations, I have heard from reliable sources that tennis athletes were allowed to play on pro circuit, defer any winnings above fair expenses incurred and later collect their prize money after completing ncaa eligibilty.
From the official site this news article includes Boulais and Kingsley recent doubles success on the pro tour.

The way the NCAA rules have been changing I doubt that they are more restrictive now. Anyway Kingsley may have a decent "nest egg" awaiting him:
$70,397
Prize Money Singles & Doubles Combined

Ass/u/me-ing that being true, you can see why some of the better players would rather play on the "pro circuit" during the fall semester than in the NCAA tournaments. I'm pretty sure that they can take classes online to maintain their academic eligibility too.

Being the devious soul that I am, would opine that 'the tournament' paid me some NIL $ on a one-time basis. Don't believe that a school's NIL foundation/etc is a necessity...heck, if a car dealership gave me a MB to tool around in, what's the diff of receiving $70,397 in one chunk as well? Maybe I could 'defer' the excess winnings until go pro, as Gracel says......what sort of interest rate could I get on that? This thing is getting murkier and murkier (NILwise). Does anyone talk to anyone else at the NCAA? Go Bucks, maximize yourself!

This fall was another good fall for the Ohio State men's tennis team. The doubles pairing of JJ Tracy and Robert Cash won the ITA All-American Championship and finished the fall as the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country.

A total of four Ohio State doubles teams are ranked at the end of the fall. In addition to Cash and Tracy, the team of Tracy and Alexander Bernard are ranked 10th, Cash and freshman Bryce Nakashima are ranked 27th and the team of Preston Stearns and Jack Anthrop are ranked 53rd. The later three teams all reached the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship in Ann Arbor. In singles, Tracy finished the fall ranked No. 4, Anthrop No. 11 and Bernard No. 103.
.
.
.
Reece Yakubov went 1-4 in his singles matches this fall and then went 2-1 in doubles at the Big Ten Singles and Doubles Championship.

On top of the collegiate success, Cannon Kingsley and Justin Boulais both played well in professional matches this fall. They played the No. 1 and 2 spots last season and should anchor the top of the lineup against this spring.

Well, there is what Ohio State is "officially" saying about Kingsley and Boulais......8D

OK, last season Ohio State had a lineup of in the NCAA tournament:

Singles
1. Justin Boulais
2. Cannon Kingsley
3. JJ Tracy
4. James Trotter
5. Alexander Bernard
6. Jack Anthrop

Doubles
1. Justin Boulais/Robert Cash
2. James Trotter/Andrew Lutschaunig
3. JJ Tracy/Cannon Kingsley

Obviously, the order and actual doubles teams could change. But with all those players back except one, the question for Spring 2024 is who replaces Trotter? The other really BIG question is: Since last year's team went to the NCAA finals, is 2024 the year Ohio State Men's Tennis finally wins the "BIG ONE"?

Great summary Script! And love your questions,
I will give it a shot for a 2024 Gracelhink prognostication.
Talent, conditioning and experience win titles, so im just giddy projecting the 2024 version, seeing how talented, experienced and deep this team will be.
Tucker must be elated to have both Boulais and Kingsley anchoring the top 2 singles lines.
Its Criminally insane that JJ Tracy (#4 ita ranked singles) is slotted into the 3 line.
Sophomores Bernard and Anthrop will be interchangeable at 4 and 5 lines.
I will take a guess that ubertalented freshman Bryce Nakashima finds his way into the singles lineup.

Doubles teams will be a blast with Robert Cash potentially paired w Tracy, Boulais, Nakajima, Lutschaunig Or whoever wins the lottery to be paired with the best doubles player in the ncaas.
Tucker will find a sixth dubs player, either Kingsley or Preston Stearns.
Last year's team overcame the normal northern transition curse when moving from indoor to outdoor venues.
they again raised a Big regular season banner and secured the conference tourney title.
This year's conference competition may come via Michigan state for the Big title. They have recruited 2 top 25 blue chippers in the last 2 cycles.
Bucks should have an easier time with TSUN this year after graduation decimated the core of the team and their coach left for Florida.
The Bucks last year showed off the value of talent, experience, strong conditioning and depth in their run to the finals.
This year Uva, Texas, tcu and possibly Florida pose the major obstacles for a Buckeye national championship.
Go Bucks.

Bucks have not released their 24 spring schedule….
It’s obvious the ITA poll really values what they see returning to the OSU team .
Acc to their preseason rankings released Jan 3, Bucks wtn is 3.4 which is strongest of all ranked teams.
The full ITA rankings are found here.

Guess the tennis team is starting to look like the football's WR room....hopefully they all stay healthy and produce on the court. Go Bucks! PS, always thought Cash was a good singles player, but see he's been knocked out of the singles line-up.

The Bucks are not shying away from the headline teams, especially noteworthy is February schedule with Buckeyes hosting defending champion U Virginia, and power houses wake Forest and South Carolina.
A five match road trip will feature a swing south to an absolutely loaded Texas, Baylor and Texas A &M.
Again Buckeyes will play 2 Big Ten opponents Illinois and Michigan in a non conference matchup,
The ITA ranking system rewards top teams who play tough schedules with the cost of losses at minimal level and rewards for victories maximized.
Today the ITA also announced some pretty exciting news,…a new contract with ESPN which would televise ncaa tennis.

Gracel, how in the heck do we play fellow B10ers as 'non-conference' matches? Does this mean they'll play the Illini and TSUN in conference that 'counts'? Love the competition of a southern swing, if not just to show the rest of the NCAA what they'll face later on.
