Ohio State Men's and Women's Gymnastics (2022 B1G Mens Champions)

AirForceBuck

No mercy
Congrats to our OSU boys for comming in second in the 2005 finals. It came down to OSU and Oklahoma for the final top 2 spots. We just got edged out by .2 points on the final man. They needed a 9.300 and got a 9.500 to win it all on their last mans vault. But we did VERY well and deserve MUCH respect even though we are heartbroken. It takes as much dedication and fitness in gymnastics as it does in both football and basketball, so I think they put on one hell of a show.

Good job Bucks - 2nd place isnt bad at all (hey - 1st out of every other Big Ten team that was competing today - Mich, Penn S.t, Illinois).

Go Bucks!

Iowa City, Iowa - Seven Ohio Sate men gymnasts competed for individual event titles on the second day of competition at the 2006 Big Ten Championship Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa. Ohio State was the only team to win two event titles at the competition.
Sophomore DJ Bucher (Mason, Ohio/Queen City Gymnastics) won the pommel horse title and buckeye co-captain Willie Ito (Jr., Huntington Beach, Calif./South Coast Gymnastics) claimed the event win on high bar. This is the second year in a row the Buckeyes' have finished in the top spot on high bar after Ronald Ferris claimed the title in 2005.
At the closing of the championships, Jake Bateman (Fr., Kingsport, Tenn./Premier Gymnastics) won the 2006 Big Ten Freshman of the Year award. Bateman's honor is the first for an Ohio State gymnast since the 2000 season when former-Buckeye Raj Bhavsar earned the recognition.
"It was great," Bateman said. "Just to know how many great gymnasts have passed through the Ohio State program it is an honor to receive the award."
Ohio State head coach Miles Avery shared the 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year award with Iowa head coach Tom Dunn. This is Avery's second-consecutive coach of the year award and fourth in his Ohio State career.
In addition, the 2006 Big Ten All-Conference team and Big Ten Sportsman of the Year award were named. The two Ohio State event champions, Ito and Bucher, were named to the 2006 Big Ten All-Conference team.
For the Big Ten Sportsman of the Year award, a member from each of the six teams was nominated. Co-captain Nicholaus Searcy (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Hocking Valley Gymnastics Center) was honored by his teammates with the award for the Ohio State squad. <!-- STORY AD BEGINS HERE -->

<!-- STORY AD ENDS HERE -->"The guys absolutely did an amazing job tonight," Avery said. "I thought all our performers did their job and represented Ohio State well."
The second night of competition started with Jimmy Wickham (So., Gulfport, Miss./Planet Gymnastics), Eddie Hay (Fr., Butler, Pa./Butler Gymnastics), and Bateman on floor. Wickham was the final Buckeye competitor on the event and hit his routine with a 9.650 earning a second-place finish and tying his career-high set at the 2006 Windy City Invitational.
Hay scored more than .300 higher than his score during the team competition to earn a 9.625. Hay's 9.625 placed him in third on the event. Bateman followed with an eighth-place finish (9.137).
Bucher and Ito both qualified for pommel horse after the team competition. Bucher won the event title with a 9.000. The win marks his second Big Ten individual championship after claiming parallel bars as a freshman in the 2005 championships. Ito scored an 8.000 for an eighth-place finish.
"I feel really good with the win," Bucher said. "It was my goal to win pommel horse and it was nice to go out and hit the set."
Pedro Pineda (So., Galloway, Ohio/Hocking Valley Gymnastics) was the lone Buckeye to compete on rings. Pineda earned a 9.050 for a ninth-place finish.
On vault, Bateman and Kristopher Kline (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Hocking Valley Gymnastics Center) qualified for the individual event championships. Bateman scored a 9.100 to finish in seventh place and Kline followed in eighth with an 8.650.
Next for the Buckeyes, Bateman and Ito performed on parallel bars. Ito scored an 8.950 and fourth-place finish. Teammate Bateman followed with an 8.912 to land a fifth-place finish.
Ito and David Ortiz (So., Cincinnati, Ohio/Queen City Gymnastics) represented Ohio State on the final event of the night. On high bar, Ito stuck his landing and scored a season-high 9.800 to win the 2006 Big Ten high bar championship and Ortiz swung into sixth-place scoring an 8.725.
"I feel relieved," Ito said. "I was struggling with the routine and it was great to hit the set when it counted."
The Buckeyes will finish their season at the 2006 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships at 8 p.m. (EST) April 6-8 in Norman, Oklahoma.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's gymnastics team posted a team total of 193.525 to place fifth at the Big Ten Championships Saturday night in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes scored just under their regional qualifying average of 193.660 for their best finish at the conference championships since 2003. CSTV will air the event on tape delay at 9 p.m. March 30.

Michigan, which had won 13 of the last 14 Big Ten championships and was aiming for a Big Ten-record eighth-consecutive title, placed fourth with a team total of 194.475. Minnesota claimed the title with a team score 195.150, while host Michigan State placed second (194.995) and Penn State took third (194.925). Behind Ohio State, Iowa took sixth (193.425) and Illinois was seventh (192.500).

"I was pleased with our performance tonight in a pressure-packed situation," Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. "We're looking forward to improving on a couple events next year but overall our performance tonight was a big improvement from last year."

OSU sophomore Maalika Moore-Thomas (Tampa, Fla./King), who was named first-team All-Big Ten Friday, placed fifth in the all-around with a total of 38.750. She tied for 14th on vault with a 9.750 to lead OSU in that event.

Senior Kaylin Schlecht (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) had Ohio State's highest finish among the individual rotations when she tied for sixth on bars with a 9.800. Schlecht and freshman Alyssa Meyer (Chesterfield, Mo./John F. Kennedy) both scored a team-best 9.750 on beam to tie for ninth overall.

<!-- STORY AD ENDS HERE --> Senior Brittany Brown (Wheaton, Md./Good Counsel), named second-team All-Big Ten Friday, led Ohio State on floor with a 9.800, which tied for 15th overall.

Several Buckeyes stepped up to have their best performances of the season Saturday night. Chief among them was sophomore Kaylan Clevinger (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Notre Dame de Sion), who competed in the all-around for the first time in her career and scored a 38.100, which included a 9.700 score on bars in her first-ever routine on that event. Meyer's 9.750 on floor tied her season best and sophomore Karley Walek (Pequannock, N.J./Pequannock) scored a season-best 9.750 on floor.

Add Moore-Thomas' all-around total as another step-up performance, as her score of 38.750 will improve upon her regional qualifying average of 38.660.

Michigan's fourth-place finish was as much a surprise as Michigan State's second-place finish. The Spartans entered the event with a regional qualifying average of 193.890, which ranked fifth among Big Ten schools.

Ohio State awaits the final regional qualifying averages to be released to determine if the Buckeyes will compete at the NCAA Central Region Championships at LSU April 8.

The outlook for women's Gynastics for the upcoming season. The women's team looks for continued improvement.

At a Glance
The climb continues for the Ohio State women's gymnastics team. The Buckeyes have already achieved new heights the last several seasons, but they are poised for a continued assent in 2008 under fourth-year head coach Carey Fagan.

Fagan, the 2007 Big Ten Coach of the Year, has led Ohio State from a No. 38 final ranking in 2005, up to No. 27 in 2006 and into the Top 20 at No. 19 last season. The 2007 Buckeyes finished fourth at the Big Ten championships and made their second-consecutive NCAA Regionals appearance. A squad of 11 gymnasts comprise the 2008 roster and each of them will factor in fulfilling the team's goal of advancing to the national championships. "We are certainly looking for everyone to contribute this season," Fagan said. "We expect the team to be led by several strong all-arounders and some key event specialist to round out the events. Right now, we are deep on every event and line-up decisions are going to be tough. That is the way we want it to stay throughout the entire year. When you have 10 plus athletes training and competing for six spots on each event everyone is forced to raise their level, in the gym and in competition. The key to our season is going to be keeping the team healthy and starting off the year strong in January. We expect to improve each weekend and be at our peak performance heading into Big Tens and the NCAA Regionals."

Gymnastics coach helps Olympians

Andrew Martin

Issue date: 5/29/08 Section: Sports

Despite years of success most Buckeye sports fans have no idea who Miles Avery is - yet the men's gymnastics coach does not resent his anonymity.

"Sure, I'd like to have the contract that Jim Tressel has or that Thadd Matta has," said Avery, "but I didn't get into this to get famous."

The coach appeared to be glad to have the chance to work with world-class athletes. Ohio State has three world class gymnasts preparing for the Beijing Olympics with Avery. Blaine Wilson, Morgan Hamm and Paul Hamm were all on the 2004 Olympic team in Athens and are working to repeat that - practicing every day for six to eight hours.

"Paul and Blaine are among the most talented guys I've ever worked with" Avery said.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Miles Avery, 10-year veteran Ohio State men's gymnastics head coach, was named assistant coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Monday at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. For Avery, the 2008 USA Gymnastics Coach of the Year honoree, the Beijing Games will mark his fourth consecutive Olympics serving as an assistant coach for his country. The Philadelphia native will join U.S. head coach Kevin Mazeika of Houston on the competition floor this August in China.

"It's an honor and a great responsibility that I am prepared for," Avery, the personal coach of three-time Olympians Paul and Morgan Hamm, said. "Part of my job in this role is to act as the mediator for the personal coaches of the athletes who are not on the floor during the competition. I will be there for both the personal coaches and the athletes so this team can live up to its full potential."

Avery, who first served as an assistant at the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta, has coached four Olympians, including former Buckeyes Kip Simons (1991-94) and Blaine Wilson (1994-97), as well as the Hamm twins.
