OL Devontae Armstrong (Official Thread)

As Coop once said, "they pass the look test". Agree that they carry their weight very well. Negative Nellie says that they might be one of those that reach their peak in HS, with little ceiling beyond that which is apparent. Hopefully not. Cleveland St. Eds is a very good HS program. Seems like many of their kids go to Notre Dame and/or Xichigan, and our pipeline hasn't been as strong lately, Eichenberg being the exception. Forget, are they in the 6-4 to 6-6 height range? tOSU is going to be thin for OL numbers, and from the lack of OTs being mentioned in the Recruiting section, am glad to see that Frye is looking locally.
Devontae is 6'5 and Deontae is 6'7, and both are under or around 280lbs and they're only juniors. I doubt that they're close to their peak. Especially considering they were in the 250s in the summer at the OSU camp.
I don't think they've come close to their ceiling, and that's why they got offered. I'm sure Frye wants to evaluate the rest of the OH OL in the summer, to get a better feel, but there are 4-6 OH OL that could be considered for offers. I can see 6+ OL sign in 2024.

Also, the lack of OH OL offers also has to be attributed to OH's lack of spring HS football. OL is already one of the hardest set of positions to evaluate, but when OSU has to wait until June to see kids up close in a camp setting, after most of the players haven't played competitively since the previous fall that makes the coach's job that much harder.

Hit this one 100% on the head. I think Frye got an early lead here on the national programs, both of these kids will end up being offered by almost every big team. Neither will likely be a guy that plays right away, but after a couple of years of strength and conditioning, they'll be monsters. Now you look at Ian Moore and that's a dude that can play right away. That's only to say the Armstrong twins would fit perfectly because we are in a position where we can develop them into great players without needing them to play right away.

That said, no idea what our odds are here. Ed's has not been kind to us in football and I hate them with a fiery passion after wrestling them every year, but we've gotta develop the pipeline there because they have top tier talent almost every year. Fingers crossed the Armstrong twins get that going for us. But a couple posts up, Eichenberg is from St. Iggy, not Ed's.

Yeah, the twins are somewhat projects, but projects in a good way for OSU(I.e. Dewand Jones). They have been wanting this offer for some time, and I don’t see a battle for them(and Birm has even said the same). I can see them and Sam Williams Dixon committing by the summer.

This. If they were already 315 lbs, I'd wonder if they were dominating based purely off size. Not the case with either of them
And this argument can be made for Hamilton and Roebuck and why they may not get offered. Both are HS Juniors and over 300lbs, and would be IOL at OSU that would need to work on their foot work. The twins are long and lean, but also athletic

Why are they considered projects? I haven’t looked at film yet tbh, but they have insane measureables. Dawand was way overweight when he got in, these are not the same prospects

Both are raw in their technique and need to add weight to be an elite OL in the B1G. The athleticism and raw ability probably drew the Dawand comparison, size is not what would compare Dawand to in terms of weight. However, wingspan and athleticism are comparable, so Frye just has his work cut out in terms of development, but it's a risk that I think almost every team in the country will take.

My bad, I wasn't trying to compare them to Dewand in terms of playing style. But more to, that they're all raw prospects, that need some refinement before seeing the field. So in essence, they are projects.
@RB07OSU broke it down even better

Toledo Central Catholic, Elder, Massillon, St. Ignatius, Moeller, Hoban, Mentor, Springfield......one thing is for sure, these kids at Ed's go through the ringer every single year and there is no hiding behind their film week in and week out. Their line is must watch with the twins and Roebuck. They've got a DL prospect that has a Kentucky offer too, that's got to be a fun practice scene.
