Yep. The line can certainly improve, but other than some run blocking issues in the 1st half I thought they looked better, especially considering 1st game jitters and missing the best lineman. We'll see what happens over the next several weeks. I swear all the people constantly complaining are making this place damn near unbearable. Sure, there's some legitimate criticism, but damn people, enjoy a solid win and a bright future. Quit making the best board on the webz seem like Facebook! It really ruins the enjoyment of a win for many of us and after one game it already has me ready to walk away from this place.

If I’m Ryan Day, I’m looking for ways to improve. And I’m looking at the OL.
But I’m just a nerd who gets to sleep in on Sundays. And a win is a win. Remember 2002? Bucks barely beat UC. They barely beat Purdue. And Illinois. But they won them all.
Or 2014. They struggled against navy. Then they lost to a team that lost the following week to James Madison. Or someone like that, anyway.
So yeah. As a dumb fan, I’m not going to stress about a 46-pt win. The coaches maybe should. But I won’t.

It seems like you’re missing a huge point here. The entire interior line was starting g their first games as a Buckeye. Not sure exactly what you were expecting. We had 170 rush yards for over 5 yards per carry and gave up 0 sacks. Not sure exactly how that’s troubling. Were they world beaters? Hell no but they got the job done and improved as the game went on. Decent first game in my opinion but I guess some people were expecting 300+ yards rushing.

Fans of several top 10 teams were wondering what they were looking at during the first quarter or two yesterday. Personally, I was a bit surprised that the overall Buckeyes offense did not really impress in the first half, despite an upgrade at quarterback.

Practice and game play differs. Akron came to play their bowl game yesterday. They played with heart and put their bodies at risk. They left the Shoe having played bigger than they are and earned respect from others and themselves. No matter what the score line says, their performance said that they will be much more of a force in the MAC this year, if they can stay healthy.

There is a big difference between practice and game day. There's a lot of jitters to overcome when you are walking on the field to play for the first time for more than 100,000 fans, who hold such high expectations.

When Ohio State started gelling on offense, there were glimmers of the talent levels we expected. I think a lot of fans were expecting Chip Kelly to open up the playbook, but he is far too smart to show anything unnecessary before a very tough road trip to Oregon, especially in the run game.

Overall, there is a lot to be excited about...one game at a time.

Players probably thought it was great to play against other than tOSU's DL. Also, the Akron guys weren't of the caliber to even be recruited to Ohio State, so made them that much more eager to show their stuff. Their QB is certainly a candidate for the whirlpool today. I expect alot more ranting and raving on the sideline by Day. Actually thought Chip called a pretty good game (most everything worked), but Day had to be going through withdrawl for not calling the plays. Do wonder how many times Day 'offered' his thoughts to Chip. Idle wondering. I, too, was surprised our vaunted RB room didn't have two hundred yard rushers yesterday. some of it due to OL hiccups? Dunno. Both ran hard, Treyveon showed his twitch, but Judkins more the straight ahead rusher. No flip/twist shown. Still, happy to see a freshman blooded, and his TD was the cherry on the cake. PS, in second half, it was clear our 'twos' held up better than their tired 'ones'. Go Bucks!

With all the returning players and great transfers I knew it was going to be difficult to meet expectations, especially right off the bat. If OSU didn't come out and drive Akron 5 yards back every play en route to 350 yards rushing, it'd be an issue.

The zone blocking will take time to get in-sync so that'll rarely happen right away. Hoping to see cleaner blocking and less confusion against WMU.

I don't think we can draw any conclusions about half time adjustments from a game against the Zips, but there was definitely 2nd half improvement.

Due to the defensive touchdowns, there were only 5 offensive possessions in the 2nd half, the last of which was a 1-play victory-formation "possession". The 4th possession was all backups.

That leaves 3 possessions for the starters on offense, though the 3rd possession did feature a fair few backups. They scored touchdowns on all 3 of those possessions.

Now we just need to get that performance in the 1st half against inferior opponents; though admittedly that has never happened in game 1, not for as long as I can remember. I think you might have to go back to the Cooper years, though it is likely there is something I'm forgetting

1996 was the fastest opening I can recall. Beat Rice and Pitt scoring over 70 each game and only giving up 1 score.

Needed the benefit of rewatching the game before somewhat intelligently giving my recap. This one is relatively short compared to my usually over spoken drivel:

1. I don't know how we start so slow. But but but...watching a lot of other teams, they start fast and stall out. While it is frustrating to watch a start like that against Akron, look at how we were at the finish line and keep in mind it is Week 1. Mind you, I am looking at myself in the mirror there and not casting aspersions. My French language was fluent for certain parts of the first half.
2. We all see why Ryan Day was so relieved to hear JJ Smith signed his LOI. We just saw the tip of the iceberg imo, but dear lord that kid is talented. And that is not just on the field, he puts the work in off the field and it shows. Impressive young man.
3. In the first half, I was a bit disappointed in the defense. But they pulled it together in a big way for 2 defensive TDs and I think the first half will be an anomaly. We know what we have on that side of the ball, no concerns.
4. Do we have an actual TE? Asking for a friend. It is only Game 1 and I know the course of the game dictated leaning on WRs and sometimes RBs, but I hope the TEs can get more involved.
5. OL play was overall disappointing. I was at an alumni event watching the game and chattering too much, and missed that Jackson was outs and Tegra is new at RG. So maybe that explains a lot. But it is still Akron and yes I expect to dominate up front even if it our 2-3 deep starting. To their credit, they did pull it together after an awful start and I will be curious to see who was graded a champion. That is the unit I think we were all most concerned on and yesterday did not go a long ways to restoring faith.
6. Mathews may be our best CB...for real. I've felt this way for awhile and I'm not saying start him over any of Burke, Iggy or Hancock, all excellent defenders that makes our secondary the best in the country. But Mathews does need to be on the field a lot and when we end up facing an elite WR, I am inclined to say that Mathews is the guy I want covering him.
7. DL looked really good. Tyleik was great, Sawyer and JT looked great. LBs were questionable at best until the second half. Hicks and Powers showed some signs of being able to step up, but otherwise I was not impressed with the LB unit's performance.

All the above is subject to the obvious caveat that it was Week 1 against Akron. But I cannot help but give a post-game summary.

As rough as the start of the game was, if Jeremiah Smith catches that and takes it to the house we likely aren't even having this discussion. Lots of jitters for everyone, from players to staff to fans, but they worked through them and got consistently better throughout which is more than we can say for other teams, like Oregon.

Special teams were much better
OL was missing arguably their best talent
DL was aggressive and created pressure from the get go
Will and Jeremiah settled in and looked great

Ryan Day said something about how this was part of Chip Kelly's long term plan for the season and how they want to get the team use to running the ball. He said something in a joking manner that if he was playcalling the game he would have tried to put up as many points as possible. Then he said the stuff about Chip Kelly having a long term plan to get this team ready to be able to run the ball late in the season.
