NCAA drops the hammer ... on Caltech

Caltech, of all teams, faces major NCAA sanctions

At a time when agents fund AAU programs, boosters bribe top recruits and shoe-apparel companies hire parents of elite prospects as consultants, it's nice to know the NCAA has its priorities in order.

On Thursday, it put Caltech in its crosshairs.

The academic-oriented Division III school received a public reprimand, three years of probation and a 2012-13 postseason ban in men's basketball and 11 other sports for using 30 ineligible student-athletes the past four years.

At issue is Caltech's unique academic policy allowing students to shop for courses during a three-week period each quarter before cementing their class schedules. Since many students weren't registered for all the classes they attended during that period, that meant under NCAA rules they were not considered full-time students when they took the field.

Cont'd ...

The good news is Caltech won't have to vacate many wins or championships, since there aren't any.

This is fucking ridiculous. Just blow up the NCAA and start over with some common sense.

Not stupid, but payback for one of the NCAA bigwig's kids denied admission to CalTech......heck, one of those 'athletes' at CalTech has a higher IQ than the sum total of ALL the NCAA's IQ's.

I'm pretty certain that this has to show up on the 'low-lights' at ESPiN, as this doesn't even begin to be good business by the NCAA. Does CalTech even HAVE an AD to address this to?

Maybe the NCAA nerd got off on the wrong exit of the LA freeway system (very easy to do) and thought he was at SC?

Wow.....guess the NCAA showed them (Nothing Consistent At All)....

In defense of the NCAA (this one time), I read yesterday CalTech reported themselves. The article did not say if the penalties were the minimums required or if the NCAA had some discretion and went a bit excessive. Either way, the NCAA needs a complete overhaul.

Not arguing Cal Tech's case, but common sense is not always common.

How about the "common sense" PSU fans apply to the "facts" in the case of JoePa? Or like GatorUbet's assertion that oversigning offers no advantage to its practitioners? Or Michigan's fans who argue that extra practice hours under the RR regime would not equate to a competitive advantage?

By far one of the greatest scenes from THE greatest movie of all time.

How on earth can you call ROTN the greatest movie of all time? Porky's was clearly superior. I'll tell you what you give me a number and I'll list that many 80's movies that were better than ROTN.

I dare say this scene is funnier alone than any in ROTN.
