Travis Lakins claimed off Chicago Cubs waivers by Baltimore Orioles

6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander, Lakins was a regular presence on Boston’s Top Prospects list since the Red Sox drafted him in the sixth round out of Ohio State in 2015. The 25-year-old bounced between Triple-A and the Majors last season, when he appeared in 16 games as a rookie. Lakins pitched to a 3.86 ERA and posted an 17.7% strikeout rate in those outings. He is a converted starter who profiles as relief depth for the Orioles heading into 2020.

MANILA, Philippines — Former Ohio State star Fil-Am pitcher Andrew Magno has been cleared to play for the Philippines in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) qualifiers at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona, on March 20-25 with the 5-11, 190-pound Detroit Tigers draft pick expected to shore up the mound corps now being formed by the Philippine Amateur Baseball Association (PABA) in coordination with American coach Bill Picketts.

PABA secretary-general Pepe Muñoz confirmed Magno’s eligibility after receiving clearance from the sanctioning body World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) which is organizing the fifth WBC next year as the official national team world championships.

Magno, 21, was born in Dublin, Ohio and was Detroit’s 15th round draft pick last year. His parents are Manny Magno and Liz Allen. He’s now pitching for the New York-Penn minor league Norwich Sea Unicorns, the Tigers’ Class A short season affiliate. Magno is among 10 US-based players nominated for the Philippines 28-man roster for the qualifiers. The others are pitcher J. R. Bunda, catcher Brady Conlan, outfielder Riley Conlan, outfielder Chase D’Arnaud, outfielder Andre Mercurio, pitcher Devon Ramirez, pitcher Peter Reyes, first baseman Mario Songco and outfielder Tim Tebow.

Astros outfield prospect Ronnie Dawson struggled through a strikeout-marred 2019 season.

  • “I hit the ball really well. I hit the ball really hard,” said Dawson, the former second-round pick. “I just missed a lot of pitches. If I cleaned up that, the strikeouts go down and my hard hits go up — I have more home runs and have more doubles.”

Thirty-eight of Dawson’s 88 hits last season garnered extra bases. He struck 17 home runs at Class AA Corpus Christi and earned a promotion to Class AAA Round Rock in August. He struck out 11 times in 34 at-bats.

“I’ve struggled my whole career, so it really wasn’t anything new,” Dawson said. “It was just finding a way to still be a good teammate through the struggle. A good teammate means being a good player for the fans: talking to the kids, making a difference, having an impact. That honestly made the season a lot easier. “

“When you have parents saying ‘Hey, thank you for talking to my kid,’ your 0-for-4 is a lot better. It’s all about perspective. I learned a lot.”

MLB Draft coming up and 2 of our Buckeyes are looking at being picked early. This mock draft has Cleveland taking Dingler at #23

https://www.mlb.com/news/2020-mlb-mock-draft-jim-callis-picks-1st-round

23. Indians: Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State
After taking last summer off to recover from a broken hamate, Dingler has shot up draft boards this spring by taking a step forward offensively. A center fielder as a freshman, he's more athletic and has more arm strength than most catchers.

Dillon Dingler, C, Ohio State (No. 54 to No. 24, up 30 spots)
Nicolas' teammate on Ohio state baseball and basketball champions at Jackson High in 2016-17, Dingler flew under the radar a bit because a broken hamate bone hampered him as a sophomore and led to him not playing summer ball. He impressed this spring, showing better athleticism and arm strength than most catchers while also doing a better job of getting to his plus raw power.

Seth Lonsway, LHP, Ohio State (unranked to No. 50)
Lonsway has one of the best curves in the Draft, combining power and depth, and he also boosted his velocity to 93-96 mph this spring. That combination helped him lead D-I in strikeout rate (21.0 per nine innings) and he might have pitched himself into the first round had he not walked eight in two innings against Stetson in his final start.
