a better bet might be whether we ever actually find out what did happen. if it sunk that fast will remains ever be located, if it crashed in china will they ever admit it, if (i saw this suggested on some other site) a meteorite vaporized it will anyone ever know? oh and why do the phones of the passengers still ring?

That would depend on how long said phones 'ring' - I suppose. Keep in mind half of the ringing you hear after dialing is while a network begins pinging the other phone and establishing a connection. At least, that's my rough understanding of it.

edit: I vote 'other' - the whole 3 stolen passports thing. Something about that seems far to coincidental for my liking.

Nah generally if a phone is off you go straight to voicemail and do not get a ringback
