LB Randy Gradishar (All B1G, All-American, CFB HOF, NFL Defensive POY, NFL HOF)

Jack Lambert recorded 1,479 tackles during his career. He was a 1st team All Pro 6 times and 2nd team twice. He was named Defensive Player of the Year in 1976.

Randy Gradishar recorded 2,049 tackles, was a 6 time All Pro and Defensive Player of the Year in 1978. Gradishar played one less game than Lambert (145-146) but had 570 more tackles.

It's ridiculous. The claim is that the Broncos inflated his tackle numbers, but even if there's any truth to that, they'd have had to do it by over 38% to get to parity with Lambert (assuming the Steelers' statisticians were as pure as the driven snow), which is not a thing. The other argument might be that he only had 4.5 sacks, but they were all in the last two years of his career, when he presumably wasn't getting any faster, so I'd assume he just rarely or never rushed the passer in the Broncos' scheme. Not to mention that he wasn't surrounded by an entire D of all-stars like Lambert was. And Gradishar was also the unquestioned leader of a D that was good enough to have a nickname and renowned for stuffing 3d and 4th and short plays.

10. RANDY GRADISHAR, 1973

Once called "the greatest linebacker I ever coached" by Woody Hayes, Randy Gradishar was one of Ohio State's first great linebackers. After earning All-American honors the year before, Gradishar led the Buckeyes in tackles with 134, averaging over 12 tackles a game, the 11th-best mark in program history.

Gradishar earned unanimous All-American honors his senior year and finished sixth in Heisman voting in 1973. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998 named to Ohio State's All-Century Team in 2000.

Sure hope he gets in.

He certainly deserves it. McMichael could get some sympathy votes for his ALS diagnosis, he’s an interesting case since he made only 2 Pro Bowls but has a very impressive career sack total for a DT.

But Randy made 7 Pro Bowls and has a Defensive POY, I can’t believe it’s taken this long.
