People don't like Werner but the fact is the kid is a Pro, he will go in the first 3 rounds

Not sure that people don’ t like Werner.
he’s an OLB and OLBs get out into conflict by the offense on almost every play. They lose some of those and he lost his share on that turrible ‘17 defense as what a freshman or sophomore?
I can’t imagine anyone who watches him play thinking he’s a bad football player. If they do, take their opinion with the appropriate sized grain of salt.

PETE WERNER - SAM LINEBACKER
This one might draw some challenges in the comments but I'm taking Pete Werner to round out the list.
Werner is a bit polarizing for reasons that should've died after he finished second on the team in tackles last year, proved to have the best coverage skills among the rotational linebackers, was disciplined in his assignments and displayed a versatility that is probably unmatched on defense. The dude actually played single-high safety at times yet was physical enough to be a solid run stopper and all-around dependable player.
It's fair to argue that linebacker depth could be enough to bump Werner from this list but Justin Hilliard doesn't have the versatility and names like Teradja Mitchell (Mike) and Dallas Gant (Will) might have better chances to crack the rotation at the other linebacker spots.

In going back and watching film from last season, I owe an apology to Werner... and we all do. Dude balled out last year and is outstanding in coverage. Be very happy that we have Pete coming back next year, complete stud.

Werner, like every other member of the defense, was frequently out of place and missed plays in 2018.
I think a lot of fans recognized, even at the time, that this was due to a scheme that was a total mess and put players in impossible situations where they were set up to fail more often than not.
The seasons that Werner and Arnette in particular had in 2019 proves that. It wasn’t the players in 2018, it was the scheme.

Yeah for sure... Werner particularly was terrible in 2018 and last year he was solid for us. I really think Werner can have the best year a LB has had for us since maybe the animal/AJ/Shazier.
He's 6 foot 3 245 pounds and can drop as a safety. He will build off last year and I think that he's going to have a monster year.

2. PETE WERNER, LB (1,463 SNAPS)
Werner has been a mainstay in the defensive lineup at strongside linebacker over the past two years. He’s started 27 games and played the second-most snaps among all Ohio State linebackers in both seasons, behind only Malik Harrison.
A three-down linebacker, Werner put his versatility on full display in 2019, when he occasionally lined up at safety in addition to his usual Sam spot. Now that Harrison is gone, it’s also possible Werner could move to weakside linebacker this year – or at least play some snaps – but one way or another, expect Werner to be on the field for just about every play with the first-team defense in 2020.

He's a student of the game and he prepares himself in extraordinary fashion. He also has the athletic skill-set to be able to play virtually anywhere on the field and be able to hold his own.
"So, those are guys that everybody is looking for in the NFL. Those are guys the Buckeyes are looking for. We want to try and find as many of those kind of players as we can. Tough, smart, aggressive players that have versatility and can run. And Pete has all those things. So, I'm excited to watch him continue to develop here. And I promise you that Pete is going to be a guy that a lot of teams will want (in the 2021 NFL Draft) because he's got so many valuable assets that allow you to do so many things with him at every level."

Spencer Holbrook: Pete Werner will be first-team All-Big Ten
Peter Werner was one of the most versatile weapons on the Ohio State defense last season. With an expanded role in 2020, he could truly unlock his full potential. He can stuff the run and he’s great at covering tight ends, which are both huge traits in an all-Big Ten schedule. With another production season, Werner will finally get the credit he deserve as an All-Big Ten performer before heading to the NFL.
