LB Pete Werner (New Orleans Saints)

“Pete Werner may be the most underrated off-the-ball linebacker in this year’s class,” Jim Nagy, the Executive Director of the Senior Bowl and an ESPN NFL draft analyst, said on Sportscenter on Sunday morning. “Extremely versatile, can cover, can stay on the field all three downs. Again, talking to teams, there are a lot of teams that have him in the late first round, so somewhere in that mid-20 to 32 range would not surprise me one bit if Pete Werner finds himself going on Thursday night.”

Just sayin': I hope he does; however, I haven't seen a mock draft yet that has Pete Werner going in the first round.

The newest Saint recently discussed how cool it will be to play with so many other Ohio State alumni during an interview on the team’s YouTube channel.

"It must seem like (the Saints have an office at Ohio State), because you talk about the last few years — they love the Buckeyes," Werner said. "Coach (Sean) Payton, he seems to like the tradition and culture at Ohio State and I think that correlates with how they do it in New Orleans. So you might as we say there's an office in Columbus, Ohio. So again, looking forward to it. That's awesome there."

"Our big word there at Ohio State was brotherhood," Werner added. "And honestly, the one thing that I'm looking forward to is just getting with a group of guys and being a part of that brotherhood — and earning the respect, being a rookie, coming in my first year. But I'm looking forward to meeting some guys I can compete with, go out every single day in that humidity and get to work."

Bump, can we use a Pete Werner type on this year's defense.

Browning got all the hype as a 5-star, Borland all the hate for lacking speed, Hilliard all the love as the comeback kid ... Werner just low-key got the job done day in day out. IMO under appreciated as one of the better tOSU LB's in recent memory.

He hits like a truck:

Covers like a blanket:

Blitzes like lightning:

Even is versatile enough to play deep safety, a true bullet if there ever was one:

Happy to see him up to a great start in his pro career:

The issue with the '21 defense wasn't the single high scheme itself. It was the lack of a play caller who can throw change ups within the same single high scheme (e.g. swapping the roles of a Fuller & a Werner like the clip above against Cinci), and simply the lack of dudes like Werner. Says a lot that our best LB in '21 is a converted RB who didn't emerge until mid-season.
