The main impression I came away with is that Warren is a kingdom-building grasper who is likely to continue to steer the conference into trouble it doesn’t need. He appears to have the Council of Presidents and Chancellors on his side, as a good kingdom-builder would; but it seems pretty clear that the ADs are, for the most part at least, not fans of his decisions, his process, or his style.

Others no doubt will read that and come away with a very different opinion. That’s fine, believe whatever you like; I’ve no intention of trying to convince anyone of anything.

I will say this though: Simply by being in that office when the LA schools called was more than a stroke of luck for Warren. It makes him look good now and positions him to look like a hero at multiple points in the future because of the negotiating power it gives him; with the networks, the ncaa, other conferences, prospective B1G members… Unless he bolts of his own accord in the next couple of years, he will definitely be around long enough for everyone to know what kind of commissioner he is. He could be grossly incompetent and maintain the current momentum, but circumstances have made him untouchable for far longer than that. Some will say, “he started well, but”; others will say, “he started poorly, then got lucky, then stayed long enough to show who he truly is”.

I’ve seen guys like him many times. Some have been able to control the narrative when it all falls apart. Mr Warren will have to have learned a lot from his performance during Covid to pull that offf

He has the potential to be a great forward leading commissioner. Or he has the potential to be Larry Scott who was a golden child when he almost pulled Texas and Oklahoma to Pac-10 and the has become the parriah for letting the conference fall to the point USC and UCLA bolted

Warren’s quote while speaking at his brother’s funeral, while not intending to do so, may end up being prophetic about his own career, after the addition of USC and UCLA.

Yes, FOX engineered USC and UCLA calling him, but I'm willing to give him credit for taking the call because you know the previous guy would have killed it immediately to protect the Rose Bowl. There's not a single bit of doubt about that in my mind. Remember when his office didn't say a single word to lobby for Ohio State to make the playoff because we'd be in the Rose Bowl if we didn't?

Maybe. He was brand new in the job and was following the lead of the majority of people who hired him. Until I see proof that a majority of Presidents wanted a season (they didn't), and he overruled them to try and cancel it, I'm giving him a big mulligan on 2020.

I think he and the Presidents laughed Notre Dame's demands out of the room. Since there seem to be very few concrete leaks about what the domers were demanding, I'm guessing this stands at the priests being told "go out and see what's out there for you and if our $100M/year is appealing at the end, come back and join as an equal member." Because right after that, you got the news that ND was trying to get 75M out of NBC and use the B12 like some plastic fuck doll to sweeten their deal.

FWIW, this is from the MwC board and a poster who works in an MWC AD. This is what he said the domers were demanding.

  • None of their games would ever be on the BTN
  • A game every year in California
  • Stanford would join with them
  • They would choose their own pod, which would include Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue and would not include Ohio State.
  • They would finish the regular season with a rotation of USC in Cali one year and Michigan the other.
The latter two are a clear indication of their intent to marginalize both Ohio State and The Game and replace it with something to the benefit and promotion of ND.

So did half the world, imo.
I like to see SEC Commish Greg Sankey dunk on Warren whenever possible. But lack of action or being overly cautious in a once in a century event isn't worthy of a ding. Or perhaps a very small ding.
