I'll take a Steppenwolfer and Barbaro exacta.........please box that.

I had to throw a few points down on the Bluegrass cat........I dig the name!

Barbaro hasn't lost a race to this date. Brother Derek is supposed to be a good horse too, but he got a bad draw.

I was glad to see Barbaro win also. He looked impressive enough to make one think that the Triple Crown is a possibility this year.

For those that missed the pre-race story, Michael Matz (Barbaro's trainer) was on United Flight 232 that crashed at Sioux City, Iowa in July, 1989. Over 100 people died, but an even larger number survived. Matz helped three kids get out of the plane, and those kids made it to the Derby today to pull for his horse (Matz's first Derby entry). One of the kids was there instead of attending the ceremony for receiving a Master's degree.

I landed in Sioux City a few days after that crash. It was rather unnerving seeing the parts of the plane still scattered around the runway. The media will now play up this angle of the story even more, but for me, just knowing he was on the plane that I saw in pieces near that runway was enough for me to be happy for his horse's win.

Yea I netted 750

I would have had more if I didn't put 500 on the 75-1. I just couldn't pass up a chance like that.

Yeah, I bet on three horses. I bet on the favorite and the longshot, and Brother Derek (9-1). I figured that gave me pretty good chance of having a winner of some kind, and thankfully, none of the top horses were overwhelming favorites, so they had a little value.

It was a very Smarty Jones-esque performance... separated himself from the field with ease coming around the last turn.... Didn't even run hard down to home stretch... and had no trouble with the fast opeing pace.

Should be even easier for him in the Preakness with a smaller field provided nothing goes wrong fo him there... I think he's good enough to win even without the best run... ie.. he can afford to stay away from danger and still win... though he has all the tactical speed he needs either way...

And... so... yeah... I think it comes down to whether he can handle the distance at Elmont....

Yep - always does. I recall Smarty Jones pulling away when he won Preakness - I figured - hes got plenty left in the tank for Belmont. Low and behold, it didnt happen. Broke my heart too, I was really pulling for him.

On another note, I had Sinister Minister to win. However, this was offset by my Steppenwolfer to show. Oh well.....

I could not remember where I had heard Michael Matz name before then they also mentioned he was an Olympic Medalist as well! He used to ride & train highly successful hunter/jumpers. He quit that area & is doing quite well in racing.
