If you could buy stock in a program other than tOSU, who would you buy for an investment you'd cash in on 5 years from now? 10 years from now? 20 years from now?
Say the stock price as of right now is the success and national respect the programs been given over the past 5 years.
The best investment might not be a team that wins a national title, but a team that comes the furthest.
For me:
Five Year Investment: North Carolina
Close second: Georgia Tech
One of these two programs could very well become the dominant force in the ACC over the next five years. Both have phenomenal coaches and have recently shown the ability to sustain success over short periods of time. I give the edge to North Carolina because of Butch Davis' prowess as a recruiter and his recent recruiting classes.
Ten Year Investment: UCLA
UCLA has been a sleeping giant for the past decade. Rick Neuheisel is there to stay and could easily start tapping into USC's stranglehold on West Coast recruits. The facilities, fan base, and recruiting talent pool are all there like few other schools that have found themselves outside the top 25. It's just a matter of time before this sleeping giant awakens, IMO.
Twenty Year Investment:
I thought about this for a while and couldn't come up with one. The Philly-NJ-NYC area is a fertile recruiting ground without a major team within 2 hours of it. For that reason, I could see a school like Rutgers, or even Syracuse, UConn, or Temple becoming a perennial top 25 team that far down the road.
I also thought about schools making the jump into a BCS conference and immediately BYU, Utah, UNLV (in the fastest growing city in America), and UCF came to mind.
Anyway, it's a slow day at work, and I thought this might stir up some interesting conversation. Would love to hear your guys' thoughts.
