HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

That’s Kerry Coombs’s problem, not Day. If Day doesn’t make a substantial move with his D coordinator this season or shortly after, then we can talk about this being a Day problem.
Who is making the call on what defense they run? "Day said he wants to run this style of defense". That quote reminded my too much of Rich Rod's time at that other school. He was forcing he defensive coordinator to run a package that they didn't want.

I addressed this in the game thread.

Day insists that the D coordinator run the single high safety system, right?

He brought in Hafley, who knew how to run it, and things were pretty good circa 2019.

Hafley left and Coombs doesn’t have experience running any system, much less single high safety.

That has to be the fundamental underlying issue in the current failure.

I think Day needs to bring in someone who knows how to run a system, period, and if he can’t find someone who knows single high safety and can recruit, completely re-evaluate his expectation that the defense runs that system.

During his media session today, he’s saying all the right things in regards to the defense not being up to par. Have to say I’m okay with all** of the answers he gave.

**(with the exception of the responses to the Sevyn Banks questions. Seems kind of strange that he’s healthy but hasn’t played.)

ESPiN ticker: Ohio State to make structural changes on Defense this week. Head Coach Ryan Day declines to answer question "who will call defensive plays going forward."

I mean, it is that channel so could be lunch question he didn't answer for all I know but it sounds really good.

*Mods: any chance we can make a rule around here to pin the current Head Coaches' threads for each sport?

Love Ryan Day... I could tell he was more or less disgusted with what happened on defense. Refused to acknowledge that Kerry was going to call plays, said Kerry has been disappointing so far from what he expected and more or less refused to even extend an olive branch.

Although I feel bad for Kerry because he's obviously a favorite of all buckeye fans you can tell that this is it for his coordination if we have another game like last week.

I thought this press conference was even more harsh than UFMs typical sayings and frustrations.

However this is what great coaches do. Saban hasn't won 7 titles because he's accepted poor performances. If a player, unit or coaching staff member is woefully under performing Saban will find someone else to get the job done. This was a good step for coach Day but if the performance happens again let's say vs Maryland (which I personally expect) coach will have to unfortunately follow through.

Also what's up with Banks? Day sort of outed him too as possibly sitting even though he's healthy?

Ryan Day 'not happy,' all options on table to fix defensive breakdowns

Changes are coming to Ohio State.

Some of them Ryan Day is going to keep private. Some of them haven’t even been determined yet by the Ohio State coach.

But as the defensive debacles pile up for the Buckeyes and on the heels of an upset loss in the Horseshoe, it’s become more clear than ever that the program needs fresh ideas if that unit has any hope of returning to the Silver Bullets standard any time soon.

“I’m not happy about that at all,” Day said. “We’re giving up too many yards and too many points, that’s the bottom line. I think now it’s not just a single game, it’s a little bit of a pattern. We took a long, hard look during the last 48 hours at what’s going on, and we certainly have to make some adjustments.

“Not only how we’re attacking other offenses, but also just structurally how we’re doing our day-to-day operations.

“We are going to make some adjustments and changes. We have to. … You want to act, you don’t want to overreact. You want to make sure you do things the right way and allow people to do their job. But when it gets to a certain point, you have to get things fixed. That’s what we’re going to do.”

Ohio State isn’t ruling anything out to address the glaring issues on defense, and nobody is spared from the hard evaluations necessary after getting picked apart for the third consecutive game.

Listened to Fulton talk about possible DC candidates that also are familiar with Day's preferences. Many of them were former HCs that are now position coaches like Charlie Strong and Muschamp (hard pass).

I really hope Day can find one of these guys and makes them the defensive version of Kevin Wilson. Get a guy who has a lot of experience in single high, has called plays before, but has already been that hot name and won't leave after a year. Find that guy who can teach and already knows his stuff, make him CO-DC and then use the other CO-DC spot to swing for the fences for a superstar who will leave sooner than later. The defense needs some semblance of familiarity in how it's run and installed rather than cycling through Ash/Fickell, Schiano, Hafley, and Coombs in only 6 seasons. It's not sustainable and part of the reason OSU can't find it's footing on this side of the ball for more than a season at a time.

Yeah hard pass on anyone mentioned as DC by Fulton IMO... you have to go get the best available if we eventually go that route and let them fix everything. I understand Ryan likes the 1 high but we have to run a defense that is multiple. That way we can run 1 high or we can run cover 2 or 3 or 4. We have got to be able to do everything so we can adjust.

Right now we are sort of stuck because we want to run cover 1 or 3 exclusively.

I just want him to be willing to adapt scheme to the talent. Don't force running a scheme we don't have the personel for cause that's what we do. Don't force DC's to use his scheme hire the best DC and get out of the way,

Best way I could equate this... would Ryan want someone telling him he has to run zone read and option football with a QB who's not mobile?

We can't be stuck on just doing 1 thing.
