HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

He hired Jeff Hafley who was an absolute homerun hire.

He was so good, in fact, that he got a head coaching job after 1 year at OSU.

Tough situation. I don’t think anybody thought Coombs would be a poor hire as DC. But Day caught a bad break. Between Hafley being a rock star, Mattison retiring, and Coombs not being the guy he hoped…..you get a situation like this.

Tough situation, but I have confidence they’ll make the right personnel changes.
Exactly. Nobody knew who the fuck Hafley was but Day recognized the talent and brought him on (they coached together with the Niners in 2016). I don’t think anybody expected Hafley to be a one-and-done here, so Day was probably caught a little off guard having to find a new DC. I suspect, barring a miracle turnaround by Coombs, Day will begin looking around for a replacement sooner and be more deliberate.

Day isn’t afraid to make tough calls, IMO.

I truly think Kerry Coombs is a co-defensive coordinator next year (to help him save face) and a new coordinator will be calling the shots.

5 years ago, Coach Day was a little known QB coach with a bad 49ers team. Urban Meyer plucked him up after Chip Kelly was fired in SF and he's now one of the very best in his field as the HC at tOSU. That's a meteoric rise...

He inherited a 12-1 team and Justin Fields. It's his team now, and it has obvious weaknesses. How well he addresses them will show whether he's "one of the very best in his field" or not. Today's performance has opened the door for him to show he's up to the task of leading a premier football program. I hope he succeeds, but time will tell.

I'll say it again, for those in the back:

2021, the first time Ohio State allowed 30+ points to opponents in their first two games. Congratulations, Coach Day.

Ohio State has trailed at halftime their last three games, losing two of them. The one win was against Minnesota. Opponents have scored 30+ in all 3 games.
Dude has made one hire that looks like bunk. See if he fixes it before you frek out. Meyer made what 4? Tim Beck, Withers, THe OC choice post Herman, Grinch... Yes the D is bad but jeez

My hope was that with Mattison retiring they would've gotten a top hire to be co coordinator. Not Freeman because he wasn't going to do that, but I think if they hadn't made the deal they already had with Coombs that would've been the call (adding another up and coming name).

If Coombs is willing to do that it might work well. Sometimes you need a players coach to work with guys and a structure coach to adjust and add wrinkles.

I think it's fair to question Day since we're still early in his tenure. Just so long as we're not trying to compare him to Larry Coker. That's damn embarrassing.

Day is the one who recruited Fields to Ohio State. He didn’t “inherit” him at all. What the fuck are you talking about?

Question(and not solely posed to you): how much of a difference is having our DC on the sidelines and not in the booth?

Jim Heacock still around? lol

I don't believe in the "co" crap. Someone needs to lead the defense and be accountable for it. If they aren't up to the task then...

I get that perspective, but it’s a common tool at NCAA level, especially when it comes to money. The pool is only so large, and titles matter to obtain certain amounts of money. So the “co-DC” approach is essentially saying “we want to pay two guys big $$$$ but one is really calling the shots”.

Don’t forget Hafley was a Co-DC and it worked beautifully with Mattison.

I believe Coombs will stay on staff as an overpaid DB coach next year, but there will be a Co-DC with him who is now calling the shots. And Kerry can still bring value as a recruiter and DB coach….will be interesting to see how he handles it. I don’t think he liked being picked over when Alex Grinch came to tOSU.

But I don’t think Kerry will have as much leverage this off-season with the way the Bucks have looked defensively and the huge salary jump he got in coming back.

I sure hope so, but what's passing currently as "defense" will do well to make the B1G title game, forget about the CFP. My biggest concern was watching Oregon use motion to exploit man defense, time and again, and yet it continued into the 3rd quarter. Finally, in the 4th quarter, we mixed in some different coverages. It shouldn't take that long. Hell, you shouldn't even begin a game with such a one track mindset.

These coaches are paid a lot of money. They need to be better.
That’s Kerry Coombs’s problem, not Day. If Day doesn’t make a substantial move with his D coordinator this season or shortly after, then we can talk about this being a Day problem.

Fire Day.. Fire Coombs. Fire Washington. Change QBs. Change LBs. Only use freshman DEs rest of the way
where's my damn coffee?
OK.. got my coffee
I'm OK now... I'm better...

Still assuming we win the BiG and face USC in the Rose Bowl

We had an extra day to prep.. but had no fire yesterday... no focus...
Coaches lost that game.. we were not prepared...

It's obvious Day should NOT have cut off his beard
the Beard god is mad

Remember back in last part of the 2013 season and the beginning of the 2014 season, where Meyer lost three of four games (and nearly lost the one game he won). Day is in the EXACT same place in his tenure now. Tell me, just how did 2014 turn out...
