HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

But OSU’s #1 recruiting pitch under Day has been NFL development. And he delivers on it.

Huge culture problem in the WHAC right now….

Not a culture problem at all.

Kids go to college to learn job skills so that they can make a living in the real world. Same for doctors, lawyers, teachers, plumbers, truck drivers, and football players. Ryan Day is one of the best in the business at developing NFL players – he is making lots of Buckeyes lots of money. In other words, he is doing his job very well. And his players are benefitting, so recruits will continue to sign with Ohio State.

Maybe you are not happy because Ryan Day doesn't win enough ... or doesn't crush inferior opponents all the time ... or hasn't won a national championship ... or doesn't say the right things in pregame interviews. But you are not the focus – the players are, and the players are doing quite well.

Please try to remember that the players do not play for you, they play for themselves because football is their profession. Winning is secondary to career advancement. Sorry, that's just the way it is. And you would be no different if football were your profession.

This is the problem though.

He was striking the right balance in previous years, but Michigan was kinda the boogeyman…..why? Bc Michigan was taking 5th and 6th year transfers clinging to their college years instead of wasting away on a practice squad or getting cut by NFL squad. But Michigans players lived to play Bully-ball and drag asses up and down the field.

OSU at least showed fight previously…..this year has been laughable. Maybe it’s the NIL $$$, maybe the wrong kids came back, maybe Day is running the team even more like an NFL organization than before since it’s a 12 team playoff….

OSU is struggling horribly bad right now and ceased a lot of ground to its opponents…..it appears the days of bullying opponents in the past is just gone. And this is with the most expensive roster in college football……not great, Bob.

So OSU didn't show any fight yesterday?

JFC. Reading some of the whining and "I;m the most knowingest couch coach ever" bullshit, this place is turning in to Bucknuts.
This used to be the best Buckeye board on the web but's it's gotten worse and worse the last few years.
Gmen out.
See ya.

Know what else has gotten worse? The team that we all root for.

Go back to Bucknuts

I agree with much of what you say. However, Ryan Day is employed by tOSU, not the players on the team. tOSU pays him alot of money to win football games and, yes, championships. Certainly, developing players who are then successful in the NFL is helpful in recruiting, but that is not the ultimate goal. Winning games and championships is.

No…..except for flashes here and there, it was completely underwhelming….

It’s all about one on one match-ups for them rather than a team goal…..which is a terrible way to play football as a team. If the defensive line has a certain call on, the DB’s need to be on that page. They should all be playing from the same sheet of music.

Right now, on offense or defense, they aren’t a collective team. They’re a team of units…..

I hope that makes sense…..this team is suffering bc the team as a whole is suffering by which unit wants to flash the most game to game….what turned into good natured competition between the units has turned into a net negative bc these guys aren’t embracing “the brotherhood” but rather who’s in line for the next pay-check.

I truly believe (as many others who contribute major $$$ to the NIL) that a mistake was made with some of these guys. Bringing back a veteran for $2M may not be worth it if that guy isn’t embracing the day to day grind. The mentality of being a college athlete trying to put good film on tape vs an OSU team is significant….and that’s always been there a bit but now you’re kinda throwing legit money at a problem that didn’t exist before.

I don’t wanna call anyone out, but imagine being a late first Rd pick projection for next draft, and you’re making $2M in last year at OSU?? Like, how hungry are you actually??? If you’re making $2M and have put a lot of tape on film, are u that concerned that Nebraska is embarrassing your team??

These things are being brought up….and I’m not singling any players out….but the team mentality is weak right now. No passion, no concern, very loose attitude. We as fans, care way more, than a lot of these kids on current roster.

And don’t confuse this with an attack on all kids…there are diamonds on this OSU roster….Jeremiah Smith is probably the hardest worker on the team. Will Howard is doing his best to make himself an NFL draft pick. Judkins has actually really tried to ingratiate himself into the team and be a good teammate. Henderson truly appreciated Judkins on the squad.

The issue is, they’re just not on the same page as a team…..period. The offensive line takes all the shit, but there’s ways to game plan around their issues. Remember when Urban Meyer flipped Reid Fragel from a TE to an OT and the following season they went undefeated ?? Fragel wasn’t perfect but the mentality to do whatever it takes to help team was…our offensive line is in dire straits right now, and there’s nowhere to turn bc the team hasn’t bought in. Period. It’s easier to plug and play a big hole when the team believes…..this team doesn’t believe at all…they’ve been tough to care about draft projection rather than team unity and wins. It’s awful.

I mean, it was one bad game. And yes, it was a really bad game. Considering opponent it's probably the worst performance from an OSU team since...the Iowa & Purdue debacles? OSU was incredibly fortunate to get the win with such a performance.

But, Nebraska game aside, the team has performed up to (or even exceeded) expectations in every other game this season, including Oregon.

I completely disagree that this team has underwhelmed all season long. I'd argue that's even factually incorrect.

That being said, I'd be lying if I said my faith wasn't hanging by a thread right now. I am certainly fascinated to see how they respond against Penn State, for the first time in ages I'm legitimately concerned about losing to them. Hopefully this Nebraska game was just a blip on the radar and they get back to the standard...we'll see.
