I clicked on this thread for the first time just now. Found this on the first page.

Oh my.

<Apologies if this has already been quoted in the past few weeks, but I didn't want to read the entire thread to find out.>

Wow, i actually remember reading some ugly things about him when he was hired, but that is spot on, unfortunately.

Smith has to go, he is the head of this department and there is no excuse for whats going on. I don't know if OSU thinks keeping him will mitigate the penalties or what, but he has to go.

Smith is part and parcel of the whole Tressel/Pryor era; the sooner he's gone, the better. No way will tOSU heal until Smith is not the AD.

Out of all the rumors and talk of Tress and the players and pedefile photographers playing golf.....I am most disturbed by Gene Smiths incompetence. He sucks bad and was on cruise controll and had know idea how to run Ohio State; I believe that he is the main reason we are in the situation we are in.....a leader of an Athletic department the size of Ohio State's lets no one do their own thing.thats what the football program was doing....we needed a leader to make tough decisions like..I dont know...keep an eye on wtf was going on protecting their 100 million dollar a year asset and sitting players for being in violation

99.9999% of the fan base is extremely supportive and hates to see him go. The 0.0001% that wrote him off exited with the QB. Yes, that might be one QB and maybe two fans. You know that hot dog QB that wore #2 and spent his 3 years taking instead of giving. We would have preferred to keep the coach and lose the distractions.

I think you're massively overstating JT's support. I'll tell you right now that one of the catalysts for his being forced out before the ncaa report was a group of numerous prominent alumni outside of Ohio telling Gee and the board that they would find it very difficult to take part in the upcoming campaign unless this mess started to be cleaned up swiftly.

Among my (admittedly unscientific) sampling of alumni (not fans)--both those in Chicago and friends from school scattered around the country--almost nobody thought he deserved to keep his job, with many wanting him fired after the initial press conference.

To say that 99.9999% of the fanbase is supportive of JT seems --without proof--a lot like you projecting your own opinion onto the entire fanbase.

Do you differentiate between alumnus in Ohio and alumnus outside of Ohio? It sounds like you are saying...{those of us who went to Ohio State strictly for the education and have no ties to Ohio its self are more rational and have a better perspective}

That wasn't my contention at all. I'm saying that the group that I specifically was aware of were from outside Ohio. I don't have first hand knowledge of it, but I'd assume Bricker Hall heard similar sentiments from some clouted up alumni within Ohio.

My response was meant to reference only actual people whose opinions I know (and admitted that it was an unscientific sampling) as opposed to the post I was answering which seemed to have no problem broadly assigning his own personal opinion to 99.999% of the entire fanbase and proclaiming it with near certainty.
