If our compliance dept. needs cleaned up, then Gene Smith allowed it to get like that or stay like that already. So he should be gone.

I truly believe that Smith knew about all of this, when made aware began discussing it with NCAA officials as to the right means to resolve without the most penalty, and started that plan.

Considering he had to talk to NCAA brass regarding men's basketball anyway, I am sure it came up.

I don't think he is going anywhere. If Gee knows he has talked with them, it's like having an NCAA official in house.

On the balance of things, it looks very much like Gene Smith will have a lot of answering to do. I still think that the root of Tressel's demise was that press conference. In particular, Gee's unfortunate comment and Smith's cutting Tressel off when he tried to answer the question about sharing the information with someone else.

I still think that things are much cleaner than most everyone thinks right now. But I remain open-minded.

This is kind of what I'm trying to say about Gene Smith's failure. The debacle surrounding that press conference and the handling of the media and JT himself after that is what caused the issue to mushroom. The failure of the AD to effectively manage the crisis is grounds for dismissal, IMO, even though the incident itself may or may not have had anything to do with him.

In case I'm not being clear, I hold GS responsible for allowing Tress to get fired. He could have come out on day one and laid out all the dirty laundry, and suspended JT for a year. There would have been a circus and it would have sucked, but three years from now, JT would still be our coach. That is, obviously, not what happened.

It will become apparent, as time passes, that Mr. Smith is a round peg in a square hole. Gee is probably not vulnerable, but Smith was part of the problem in the eyes of fans. Tressel's tenure at Ohio State will be viewed as a good thing; Smith will become unknown.

I stated he should go after the NCAA report..but if he is able to dump all this in JT's lap and get the school off with a wrist slap..then I will agree he is a genius..(I have to see it to believe it)
