What is the goal of a state school? Shouldn't it serve as many kids as possible? Profit should be second but good management should seek a "balance" between serving the kids and money making. That's showing responsibility to the people of the state.

And a good way to do that, and to have good PR, is to run a small surplus and kick a few bucks back to the University generally. Could even use it to fund additional physical fitness/wellness opportunities for the general student body.

It should also be noted here, for anyone who didn't see it in the original linked article, that the OSU Athletic Dept gave $3.1M to the university in fiscal 2019.

Yes, I knew they'd done that in the past, and I think it's a good PR practice, even if it's not usually a lot of money. I'm fine with a largely break even AD, even with our huge revenue, and giving all of our athletes pretty much the best of everything, but I doubt that there isn't a little fat that could be cut. I don't for example, see a lot of buffer for Day's huge raise and extension after OSU wins the 2020-21 natty ...

Just looking at that article, there are a few line-items that stand out.

I didn't realize just how bad attendance was in 2018 (since that was the season included in the 2019 fiscal year), with multiple non-sellouts and the lowest single-game attendance (Rutgers) of this millennium: that alone was an $8.8M drop in ticket revenue! But it looks like attendance came back up about 2000/game for 2019, with a CFP trip to Glendale instead of the freakin Catalina Wine Mixer, so gameday revenues should certainly be improved. Then there's $1.5M to Dildovois & Plimpton which is hopefully a one-time thing, and two new sports facilities. And the previous year's severance number included a $4.3M payment for Matta in Dec.17, so that's off the books too.

So all told, I don't see covering that $600K deficit (not that big scary $10M) as too big of a task going forward, and Day's upcoming multiple-championship run will surely help cover some rising costs.

There's no one I'd rather see at the helm of the Ohio State athletic department during this challenging time than Gene Smith.

Just sayin': It's just an OK interview; however, I couldn't help noticing how old he looks. I "ggogled' a site and found a photo history of his career/life (i.e. sort of a "photo bio") that was kind of interesting:

Smith wants the Buckeyes to stay safe and abide by the law, of course, but he isn’t going to discourage them from protesting peacefully – and he expects that they will advocate for change in the right way.
