Oklahoma State Guard/Forward Isaac Likekele Transferring To Ohio State

The Buckeyes fill their final roster spot with a versatile veteran who has 110 career starts under his belt.

Oklahoma State guard/forward Isaac Likekele announced on Wednesday he is transferring to Ohio State, where he’ll have just one season of eligibility remaining after taking advantage of the extra year granted to all student-athletes amid the pandemic.



A former three-star prospect from Mansfield (Texas) Timberview, the 6-foot-5 and 215-pound Likekele has played in 114 games for the Cowboys over the last four seasons, including 110 starts. He averaged 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists while shooting 46.0 percent from the field and is the only player in school history to record 1,000 points, 600 rebounds and 400 assists in his career.

They managed to find one player who has proven he can do both. Oklahoma State transfer Isaac Likekele announced his commitment to the Buckeyes on Wednesday, giving them a 6-foot-5, 215-pound veteran who can help at both point guard and power forward.

Hopefully he plays bigger than his height, I really think Ohio State will need some "front court help" this season against teams with a dominate "true center".

Likekele isn’t exactly a dead-eye shooter, having knocked down just 18.2 percent of his 3-point attempts, 53.6 percent of his free throws and 43.7 percent of his shots from the floor overall last season, but he remains an asset in a multitude of ways nonetheless.



The presence of Likekele also means Holden, McNeil and Justice Sueing may no longer be on the hook to handle primary ballhandling duties, which they appeared likely to do in the absence of another point guard outside of Thornton.

In a college game that has become increasingly dominated by guard play and small ball lineups, Likekele will only aid in Ohio State’s ability to play small and somewhat positionless on the perimeter.

Miya ranks him as the ninth-best defender in the portal, and he is expected to bring size, defensive toughness and offensive versatility to an Ohio State roster seeking to replace 85.9% of its points, 71.6% of its rebounds and 83.6% of its minutes played from this past season.

College basketball transfer portal: Favorite fits of 2022 cycle, version 2.0

Isaac Likekele did not enter the transfer portal because he had a bad relationship with Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton. He simply was looking for more opportunity, and Oklahoma State has a lot of talented guards that he'd have to share the load with. It didn't take long or Likekele to find what he was looking for. Ohio State is replacing basically its entire backcourt, so Likekele can team up with fellow Big 12 transfer Sean McNeil at Ohio State and have a huge role. Buckeyes coach Chris Holtmann has really done a terrific job with guards throughout his tenure. Likekele is going to get a chance to run the show at Ohio State. The floor for Likekele at Ohio State is so high. At the very worst, Likekele will be one of the premier perimeter defenders in the Big Ten. But Likekele has lofty goals, and he found the opportunity he was looking for at Ohio State. Betting on hard-working players like Likekele is easy. There's a real chance Ohio State sees the best version of Likekele that we haven't seen yet.

Likekele is going to be a main fixture in the lineup this season, and could very well be a starter at the one or the two. He is a veteran that is reliable with the ball, plays both ends of the floor at a high level and can bring leadership and experience to a fairly young team that will be playing four freshmen.

My current prediction, and this could very well change since its only early September, is that Likekele will start at the two next to freshman Bruce Thornton. Sean McNeil and Eugene Brown are also candidates to start at the two, and there is a small chance the Buckeyes coaching staff goes Tanner Holden-Justice Sueing at the two and the three, but Likekele makes the most sense at this current time. Plus, it would help take some pressure off of true freshman Bruce Thornton to not be the lone ball handler on the floor.

Thornton and Ice could be the starting backcourt, as that would be plausible and perhaps the best long-term plan for the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Ice-McNeil-Sueing-Sensabaugh-Key in the starting lineup, with Thornton & Holden the top reserves.
