D'Angelo Russell

Sophomore southpaw D'Angelo Russell is one of the top lead guards in the class of 2014.

Excellent floor vision is a weapon. It's communicating with your eyes, and it allows players to dissect defenses, exploit angles and create opportunities for easy buckets.

2014 point guard prospect D'Angelo Russell (Louisville, KY/Central H.S.) has that skill. The Rivals' No. 14 ranked player in 2014 and consensus top-5 floor leader is already drawing heavy interest early into his sophomore year.

Carrying offers from Indiana, Xavier and Louisville, Russell can also spit off a long list of highly interested suitors.

"Indiana, Xavier, Louisville, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Florida, Virginia, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Texas, Dayton, Notre Dame, USC and Purdue," are all recruiting him hard, Russell told Rivals.

And it's easy to see why. In this highlight package released by CLHTV today, Russell, who hooped for All-Ohio Red this summer, shows off his ability to penetrate, thread the needle, create his own shot and bury pull-up jumpers.

CLASS OF 2014 INTRO: D?ANGELO RUSSELL

June 11, 2012 by NBE Blogger

As one of the lite prospects D?Angelo Russell might not need an introduction to the masses. However, ahead of his appearance at this coming week?s NBPA Top 100 High School Basketball Camp, NBE felt it was important to catch up with the Montverde Academy shooting guard to get the latest on his recruitment, which is sure to be closely watched by many fans in the coming months.

Some might have lost track of Russell in the last year as the Kentucky native transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida. As a sophomore he did not get a ton of minutes on the powerful prep squad, but he has once again showed the talent that makes him an elite prospect, especially on the offensive end, this spring back in his comfort zone with the Louisville Magic AAU program, which he refers to as playing with to be ?like a brotherhood.?

Russell has the complete skill package as a 6-foot-4, 180-pound shooting guard. He can create off the bounce for himself and others. He is strong enough to get to the rim and finish through contact and he can hit the perimeter shot consistently out past the three-point arc. Russell is also not afraid to defend and will do so with effort consistently.

Russell hopes to improve on every aspect of his game this summer, which makes sense as he has no glaring weaknesses needed to address on the floor. Following the summer he is looking forward to a bigger role with Montverde and leading them to accomplish what they just fell short of this past season.

?[At] Montverde Academy [I want to} to win the national tournament and get better as a team every practice," he told NBE Sports.

With the July evaluation periods rapidly approaching you can be certain some of the nation's elite programs will be taking in the games of Russell and his extremely talented Louisville Magic squad. Russell already owns an impressive offer list which will certainly come in more focus very soon when college coaches can contact Class of 2014 players on a more regular basis beginning later this week.

"Ohio State, Xavier, Indiana, Louisville, Cincinnati, Missouri that I know of," replied Russell when asked about his current offers. "No favorites [at this time].?

D?Angelo Russell, a Class of 2014 shooting guard was an impressive offensive force during the camp. The 6-foot-3 native of Louisville (KY) who attends Montverde (FL) Academy averaged 9.7 points a game, good enough for 12th on the camp?s scoring list among players who played more than two games.

While Russell mentioned he will visit Cincinnati next week, he also gave NBE his opinion on which four schools are on him the hardest at this point.

?I would probably say Louisville, Indiana, Missouri, and Ohio State [are coming after me the hardest]?

D?Angelo Russell update

Monday also provided a chance to catch up with 2013 guard D?Angelo Russell and find out his thoughts on his recent unofficial visits to Kentucky and Louisville.

?U of L was nice. It?s right around the corner,? said Russell. ?I went in there with a couple other people and just listened to what they had to offer, and they offered me a scholarship.

?Kentucky was nice also, and coach Kenny Payne really caught my eye. Not sure if he was trying to sell me, but what he was saying really caught my attention.?

Ohio State, Missouri, NC State, Indiana, Louisville and Kentucky have shown the most interest in Russell, with all having offered with the exception of UK.

Russell got off to a slow start of sorts in game action, but as the weekend wore on he looked more comfortable and assertive on the floor. He?s a gifted player who will be an asset wherever he eventually lands.

PG/SG D'angelo Russell, 6-foot-3, Montverde (Fla.) Academy 2014: Russell was sensational in leading his Louisville Magic team to a 30-point win over the Compton Magic, and he did it by being productive on both ends of the floor. Defense is the calling card of the Magic, and Russell defines that by outworking his opponents and using his length and athleticism to create turnovers. Offensively, he is multi-talented as a scorer around the rim, a passer, and as a mid-range shooter off the dribble. Russell also created several second-chance buckets for his team, and led the Magic in scoring with more than 20 points in the win. Playing in front of staff from Ohio State, Xavier, Tennessee, Louisville, and West Virginia, he proved that he is worthy of his five-star ranking.

He has some talent for sure, seems to have better handles than Lyle, but I probably would pick Lyle if I had to choose. But obviously he'd be a good get for Matta if he's able to land him. Some services have Russell ranked the #1 SG in the country. But one of the other potential benefits of getting Russell is he's more of a combo than Lyle, which may make it easier to land a stud PG in 2015 which OSU will need to add another PG in that class regardless of who they get in 2014 since Scott will be gone.

Let's just see OSU take both Lyle and Russell, and then let them alternate who gets to take the ball up the court. I love both of these guys' games, and would love for the Buckeyes to land either (or, again, both!!).
Taking both would probably hurt us in the Jones/Okafor package if there is one but this type of discussion belongs to the General Recruitingg threa:wink:
