Future Football Schedules (Updated 11/21/2023)

Now, for fun, let's pick a random SEC team's non-conference schedule since 1990. I'm going with Auburn. It looks like in 1990 they had the 2 cupcakes/1 P5 thing down! Then in 1992, they said "screw this P5 crap". Also, they scheduled these easy non-conference games throughout the season, no doubt to give them a breather from that rugged SEC schedule. All of OSU's non conference games where at the beginning of their season (save for 2 exceptions)

90: Louisiana Tech, Florida State, Cal State Fullerton
91: Georgia Southern, Texas, Southern Mississippi, SW Louisiana
92: Samford (not a typo, not Stanford), SW Louisiana (Auburn won by 1 pt), Southern Mississippi
93: Samford, Southern Mississippi (man, they LOVE these guys), New Mexico State
94: NE Louisiana, E Tennessee State, East Carolina
95: Tennesse-Chattanooga (JFC :roll1:), Western Michigan, NE Louisiana
96: Alabama-Birmingham, Fresno State, NE Louisiana (they love them some non-LSU Louisianas)
97: Virginia (first P5 since 1991, and on the road!), Central Florida, Louisiana Tech
98: Virginia (they lost 19-0! That'll teach 'em to schedule P5 teams), Louisiana Tech, Central Florida
99: Appalachian State, Idaho, Central Florida
00: Wyoming, Northern Illinois, Louisiana Tech
01: Ball State, Syracuse (on the road, they lost 31-14), Louisiana Tech
02: USC (on the road, they lost 24-17, seeing a pattern?) W. Carolina, Syracuse (won 37-34 in OT)
03: USC (at home they lost 23-0), Georgia Tech (on the road, lost 17-3), Western Kentucky
04: Louisiana-Monroe, The Citadel, Louisiana Tech
05: Georgia Tech (lost, 23-14 hmmmm), Western Kentucky, Ball State
06: Washington State, Buffalo, Tulane
07: Kansas State, South Florida (lost 26-23 ot), New Mexico State, Tennessee Tech
08: Louisiana-Monroe, Southern Mississippi, West Virginia (lost 34-14 on the road)
09: Louisiana Tech, West Virginia, Ball State, Furman (WFT?)
10: Arkansas State, Clemson (!), Louisiana-Monroe, Tennessee-Chattanooga
11: Utah State, Clemson (on the road, lost 38-24), Florida Atlantic, Samford
12: Clemson (in Atlanta, lost 26-19), Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico State
13: Washington State, Arkansas State, W. Carolina, Florida Atlantic
14: San Jose State, Kansas State (on the road, they won!), Louisiana Tech, Samford
15: Louisville, Jacksonville State (they won in OT), San Jose State, Idaho
16: Clemson (they lost at home 19-13), Arkansas State, Louisiana-Monroe, Alabama A&M
17: Georgia Southern, Clemson (they lost on the road 14-6), Mercer (WTF?), Louisiana-Monroe
18: Washington, Alabama State, Liberty (lol)
19: Oregon, Tulane, Kent State, Samford

So,let' recap

Auburn is 10-10 against non-conference P5 schools since 1990.
They are 2-5 against P5 schools on the road or in a neutral site (Wins are at Virginia and at Syracuse)
That's pretty mediocre for one of the mouthiest fanbases on the internet. But in their defense they do have that gauntlet of the SEC - God's Conference(tm), which in their mind trumps everything.

<shrug>

And while looking at the seasons since 1990, I see a lot of 8-5 years. Not scientific, but I'm just saying.

Ohio State's non-conference P5 record since 1990:

Home: 28 wins, 5 losses (USC x2, Texas, Oklahoma, Virginia Tech)
Road: 11-4 (USC x2, Washington, Miami(FL))
Neutral: 4-1 (Miami(FL))

For you keeping score at home, that's 53 P5 non conferece games for OSU, 20 for Auburn

OSU's non Conference P5 record: 43-10
Auburns: 10-10

LOL Alabama's Non-Conference P5 record since 1990:

90: 0-0
91: 0-0
92: 0-0
93: 0-0
94: 0-0
95: 1-0 (North Carolina State at home)
96: 1-0 (@North Carolina State)
97: 1-0 (Houston at home)
98: 1-0 (BYU at home)
99: 1-0 (Houston at home)
00: 0-1 (@UCLA)
01: 0-1 (UCLA at home)
02: 0-1 (@Oklahoma)
03: 0-1 (Oklahoma at home, they also lost @Hawaii and at home to Northern Illinois)
04: 0-0
05: 0-0
06: 1-0 (Duke at home)
07: 1-1 (Lost to Florida State @jacksonville, beat Houston at home)
08: 1-0 (Clemson @Atlanta)
09: 1-0 (Virgina Tech @Atlanta)
10: 2-0 (Penn St at home, @duke)
11: 1-0 (@Penn St, their only game out of the south since 2003)
12: 1-0 (Michigan @Arlington, TX)
13: 1-0 (Virginia Tech @Atlanta. They sure do love them some Atlanta road games)
14: 1-0 (West Virginia @Atlanta, told you)
15: 1-0 (Wisconsin @Arlington, TX)
16: 1-0 (USC @Arlington, TX)
17: 1-0 (Florida St @Arlington, TX)
18: 1-0 (Louisville @Orlando, FL)
19: 1-0 (Duke @Atlanta)

Home: 7-2. But the last Non-conference P5 home game they played was in 2010, 10 years ago
Road: 3-2, but they haven't played a road non-conference P5 game since 2011, 9 years ago
Neutral: 11-1 (loss to Florida State@Jacksonville, FL). 9 of the games were in Atlanta, GA or Arlington, TX.
Their last 8 non-conference P5 games have been at a "neutral" site.

Since 1990, Alabama has only played 5 true road games (@North Carolina State, @Oklahoma, @duke, @UCLA, @Penn St) and they are 3-2

So, what's my point?

1. The SEC schedules cupcakes. A lot.
2. The SEC doesn't make road trips to P5 teams and when they do, they don't win that much
3. Yep, they win championships, on the field. Can't take that away. But, by virtue of not having to play true road games and kicking the shit out of the Furmans, Citadels, and directional Louisianas of the world, maybe inflates their records and maybe gets them the benefit of the doubt when being invited to said championship playoff/game. And then ranked highly the next year. Rinse, repeat.

You forgot the aforementioned loss @Hawaii in 2003 (37-29). They also beat Hawaii 21-16 in Aloha Stadium the year before (2002), so they are 4-3 in seven true road games.

EDIT: NM. Hawaii isn't a P5 team. Still, they did beat Bama.

That list of Bama's P5 opponents, by definition, leaves out their 2007 loss to La-Monroe.

But I hate to see that game not referenced in a look at Bama's OOC Schedule. It's almost like leaving out TTUN's game against App St that same year. Those games should always be remembered.

OHIO STATE WILL DISCUSS RESCHEDULING NON-CONFERENCE GAMES AGAINST OREGON, BOWLING GREEN AND BUFFALO, BUT THAT WON'T BE EASY

As a result of the Big Ten’s decision to cancel all non-conference football games for the 2020 season, Ohio State will not travel to Oregon or host Bowling Green or Buffalo this year.

Ideally, each of those non-conference games will still happen in another year.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Thursday that he had spoken with the athletic directors from all three of those schools and that they have all agreed to have discussions about hopefully rescheduling those games for future seasons.

“I called the three athletic directors today – Mark (Alnutt) at Buffalo, Bob (Moosbrugger) at Bowling Green and Rob (Mullens) at Oregon – and shared with them what our announcement would be. They’re all going through similar conversations in our leagues, so they were totally understanding, but I shared with them that I would call next week and see if we can try and reschedule,” Smith said.

Mullens said in a statement on Thursday that Oregon, who will also play no non-conference games in 2020 after the Pac-12 followed the Big Ten’s lead on Friday, has “agreed to have ongoing discussions about the options for rescheduling the Oregon home game in our series.” Moosbrugger and Alnutt both said in statements that it was “disappointing” their schools would be unable to play football games at Ohio State this year, but also said they understood that difficult decisions had to be made.

“The last time we played in the Horseshoe, our All-American linebacker Khalil Mack had one of the finest performances of any player in the country and it vaulted him into the national spotlight,” Alnutt said. “We were looking forward to having that opportunity again to showcase our program nationally. We will have continued discussions with Ohio State to reschedule this game in a future season.”
