2021 FL WR Christian Leary (Alabama Verbal)

Just by watching his film, I don't think anyone would complain if we got him instead of Stellato
My thoughts, as well! When you play HS football in Florida and you make everyone else on the field look slow, that says a lot!

Edit: I just looked at his 247 profile and it shows a 4.56 40 time, which surprised me. However, they compared him to Andy Isabella, who ran a 4.27 at the NFL combine. So I’m willing to bet that he’s easily sub 4.4

That 4.56 was from his Soph year though! I could see him being 4.4 when he gets to OSU.
And yeah, the fact that he had FL players looking like their in quicksand, speaks volumes

He tracks the ball really well for what you’d expect of a slot receiver. That’s always really important to me when looking at what I’d consider “shorter” receivers (under 6 feet).

One of the best deep ball receivers ever was Steve Smith who tracked the ball as any NFL receiver ever, and used his body masterfully to ward off defenders.

I like that a lot of Leary’s highlight tape are deep balls into relatively tight coverage where he makes the play on ball. He isn’t simply blowing past DBs and catching the ball against air....he’s making plays on the ball.

When you are loading up on the type of WRs we’ve got in the pipeline, having a guy like this one on one in the slot is a major weapon. Give him too much space and he kills you on short pitch and catches where he has room for YAC, play him tight and he has the skill to go get a 50/50 ball down the middle of field in single coverage.

I think of a guy like Paris Campbell who was an amazing offensive weapon, but never truly had that “pure WR” feel but had to be accounted for on every play. Leary feels like a pure WR who has explosive speed. He provides more versatility in the route tree and what he brings as a WR.
