This new generation seems to have honed the 'right now' aspect of life to a sharp point. NIL is the 'right now', and a successful pro career is the 'later'. If a kid has grown up poor, the NIL dollars loom large. But $100k (or $1 mil) isn't going to set you up for life. Would suggest that the ability of the school to put the kid in the league would outweigh all the NIL bucks that are floating around. Well, maybe not all of them, but mostly. See 5* QBs flocking to tOSU, USC, and Texas to be developed into NFL first rounders, because they'll be developed enough that they can go to the lesser big-time schools and be able to start. If it works out for them at their first school, great, but if not, there's other Playoff contenders that would welcome them so they get their minutes in the spotlight. Still don't hear about any 'sharing' of NIL revenues with the blue collar guys. Maybe we'll see the sophomore QB Heisman winner buy Rolexes for his OL from his NIL money?

For a poor kid, $100k or $1mil can definitely set someone up for life. As that can provide opportunities their family never had. Idk why it’s so foreign that people are shocked that poor kids (or teenagers with no or little income) are swayed by NIL money, and still won’t work on their craft to be a professional. Why are we not looking at these guys like young adults as opposed to kids who will just blow their money. There’s a lot of older people who have blown money just as stupidly. NIL has been underground for decades, and guys have still made it to the NFL. Players are in the NFL HOF and admitted to being paid to come to colleges, and STILL became great players. I hope all of these kids take the best opportunity for themselves and their family’s. If it’s to OSU, then so be it, if not then God speed.

Elsewhere, Ohio State has long been considered the favorite for five-star 2023 receiver Carnell Tate from IMG Academy in Florida, but two weekends ago he visited Tennessee, and late last week, On3 revised its prediction for Tate to Tennessee. The co-president of Spyre Sports, a for-profit collective associated with Tennessee, told The Athletic in February, “We’re prepared to invest a substantial amount of resources into the 2023 recruiting class.” A co-founder of The Foundation, Ohio State’s recently announced non-profit NIL fund, recently said on a Bucknuts podcast, “We can’t make an official deal with a recruit.”

An $8 million dollar deal for 1 5Star athlete? Thats more than a pro contract for most players. Why would anyone ever turn pro again if these things continue? Play through college, invest your money and live on the interest the rest of your life doing nothing or what you got your degree in. Of course, we know these kids aren't all that smart so they'll need to play I'd bet but still, that option is there. Retired at 23, that'd be the life wouldn't it?

Doesn’t appear to be sustainable…It’s going to have many implications as the dust settles and hopefully the quality of the product doesn’t suffer. The athletes are finally getting a fair market value but crazy how fast this is accelerating…

because you run out of college eligibility and you are good enough to continue to get paid as a pro (and keep doing NIL to some degree).

Your basic premise is why I like this so much for the kids though, IF they get help with handling the money you could do a lot more for them without them having to go pro.

another way to look at it is as pent up demand that was artificially suppressed by the bureaucracy of the NCAA. This money has always been there for the kids. The only thing new is the NCAA getting knocked out of the way.

These cars/trucks that students athletes are getting right now are essentially loaner vehicles, there is no ownership, at least that hasn’t happened yet, at least not to my knowledge. Why they can take it right back when they are no longer Ohio State players. Supposedly these NIL deals cannot be tied to performance, but they absolutely can be tied to representing the University.

I feel like they are probably written like my Microsoft software stuff with OSU back when I went to OSU in 2008-2012. Basically yada yada yada this item becomes permenantly yours on completion of your degree. Probably with the slight modification of or leaving for the pros.
