External DVD player would you recommend?

the need has come up that I need an external DVD drive for my wife's laptop. the POS Philips it currently has doesn't read anything other than CDs and won't burn anything that can be read on any other machine.

So the questions are

1) is it cheaper to go with a new internal or slim DVD drive on the laptop (I would need to take the case off to install it)

or

2) would be just be easier to get the external drive....??

Plextor by far for quality if thats your concern.... however it comes at a price.

If your looking for decent price and performance, Lite-on and samsung are what I use.
