DT Tracy Sprinkle (National Champion)

MASK OFF: TRACY SPRINKLE'S JOURNEY OF PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE AND PURPOSE

91251_h_0.jpg

The Ohio State University prides itself on the people, the tradition and the excellence of its athletics programs. Buckeye traditions and the excellence need no introduction. But how well do we know the people? Fans know players by the awe-inspiring feats they perform. Mask Off takes a closer look at those individuals as human beings.

Tracy Sprinkle was – and will forever be – an Ohio State football captain, a National Champion, a two-time Big Ten Champion and the owner of five pairs of Gold Pants. His on-field accomplishments speak for themselves.

Anchoring the interior of Ohio State's defensive line, Sprinkle was a Goliath on the field. In the broader context of life, however, Sprinkle more resembles the biblical David. The odds have been stacked against him since birth.

In high school in Elyria, Sprinkle struggled to stay on track. Contending with hardships, he persevered and signed as the lowest-ranked member of an Ohio State recruiting class that included names like Vonn Bell, Joey Bosa, Eli Apple and Ezekiel Elliott.

After a season with the Buckeyes, Sprinkle's football career came to an end – or so it seemed. He was dismissed from the team after being arrested and charged with crimes including drug possession and failure to disperse.

When it emerged that the charges against Sprinkle were less severe than originally reported, and that he would be cleared of drug charges, Urban Meyer decided to give him a second chance. He was reinstated and played in every game in 2015.

In 2016, having already overcome staggering odds, Sprinkle savored walking on to the field for his first game as a starter – his proudest moment as a Buckeye. But the triumph was short-lived. During the first quarter of play, he ruptured his patellar tendon. His season was over and, likely with it, his football career.

What followed is already Buckeye lore. Sprinkle became the heart and soul of the 2016 team from the sideline. According to defensive line coach Larry Johnson, his work ethic in rehab was legendary. He earned the respect of his teammates and his coaches in the gym and the locker room. He was elected as a captain for the 2017 season and started every game on arguably the best defensive line in school history.

As of the publication of this piece, Sprinkle is in Miami training for the NFL draft. Despite all that Sprinkle has overcome and all he has achieved, he is not considered a top prospect. In fact, he is not projected to be drafted by any major outlets. The odds are once again stacked against Tracy Sprinkle, and he will once again battle – with the quiet confidence and steady determination of someone who has seen the bottom – to eclipse his critics.

Whether Sprinkle is drafted will make a huge difference in his life. For all that he has overcome, he has yet to reap the financial fruits of his labor. Regardless of his performance wearing pads, though, Sprinkle is living a remarkable human life.

SKULL SESSION: QB COMPETITION STRESSES STANLEY JACKSON AND KIRK HERBSTREIT, ELYRIA SUPPORTS TRACY SPRINKLE, AND JEREMY PRUITT RIPS TEAM AND FANS

ELYRIA SUPPORTS TRACY SPRINKLE.
The NFL Draft starts Thursday, which means I need to get my living will in order in the event the Cleveland Browns draft Wyoming's Josh Allen No. 1 overall.

Tracy Sprinkle isn't in discussion to go No. 1 overall, though that won't stop his hometown of Elyria from supporting him.

From chroniclet.com:

“The support in Elyria, Ohio, has always been there for me,” Sprinkle said. “I’ve been raised here and my whole life I’ve been playing football here. To see these guys come out and support me has been great.”

Where Sprinkle winds up playing professionally is anyone’s guess, but there’s a chance he could land with his hometown team. The Browns have nine selections — more than most teams — and Sprinkle said they were one of two teams he worked out for, the second being the Houston Texans.

He’s said earlier that representatives from the Eagles, Colts and Broncos had been in contact with him. Everything will come into focus after the draft, which begins Thursday and runs through Saturday.

The effect Sprinkle could have on youth by making the NFL isn't to be understated, either. Former Penn State and Miami Dolphins wide receiver and Marionaire O.J. McDuffie once signed a card for me at Wal-Mart in the City of Kings. I spent the next two weeks thinking I was going to the NFL.

There are kids in Elyria more talented than me. If Sprinkle can make it, so can others.

SKULL SESSION: TRACY SPRINKLE THRIVES DESPITE ADVERSITY, D'ANGELO RUSSELL HELPED SECURE DJ CARTON'S COMMITMENT, AND LARRY JOHNSON'S MARTIAL ARTS TECHNIQUES

DON'T BET AGAINST TRACY SPRINKLE.
Tracy Sprinkle went undrafted following his senior season at Ohio State, meaning he'll have to earn a roster spot during the preseason. But that's fine with him; nothing's come easy his entire life, he's not about to stop fighting now.

In an article he wrote for Fansided.com, Sprinkle discussed his difficult upbringing that made him who he is today. He was born the youngest of 12 into a family living off of food stamps, and suffered through the death of his brother, who was shot in killed at age 22.

Now, he faces his next battle.

From Sprinkle:

After all the challenges that I’ve faced, my biggest occupational one lies ahead. I’ll use everything at my disposal to conquer it, from the past heartache and adversity to the lesson learned along the way.

The competition is never comfortable, but it’s not catching me off-guard. Ohio State fostered plenty of tough battles for playing time. Still, it’s different here. You are fighting against grown men who are all trying to feed their families. Jobs are on the line.

Ultimately, I want to get through camp healthy. I have to be durable and keep my mind on the game. Some say you can have a great camp and make it elsewhere if things don’t work out here, but I want to be on the Carolina Panthers. This is my team. Now it’s time to hit the field and prove my worth.

I have to Keep Pounding.

After all Sprinkle's gone through in his life, I'm not about to count him out now. He's got too much drive and too much to play for. He's making that roster. Book it.

Good job Mr. Sprinkle. Especially so, considering that both teams are wearing the same jersey.

Yeah - that game was annoying to watch.
He later had a 15-yard personal foul called on him when the quarterback slid at the last moment. I understand and agree with the rule and the call was right, but it's kinda bad luck to call that when the quarterback is still in the pocket.

#HowSheGoneEat - a motivational phrase meaning, how are the women in your life (wife, fiance', girlfriend, mother, sister, daughter, neices) going to survive if you don't bring home the bacon?

HOW SHE GONE EAT? We got us some young entrepreneurs among the recently graduated Buckeye defensive linemen.

Tracy Sprinkle, Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes and Michael Hill have launched a clothing line based on their not-so-inside, long-running inside joke.

Tracy Sprinkle is getting another shot to play in the NFL, and it's coming with his hometown team.

The Cleveland Browns announced Saturday that they have signed the former Ohio State defensive tackle, a native of Elyria, Ohio.

After finishing his Ohio State career in 2017, Sprinkle signed with the Carolina Panthers following the 2018 NFL draft, but was released by the Panthers prior to the start of the regular season and has not been on an NFL roster since.

Sprinkle had a tryout with the Kansas City Chiefs at their rookie minicamp in May, but did not ultimately sign with the team. He also played for the Atlanta Legends in the short-lived Association of American Football this spring.

Sprinkle also launched a clothing line this spring, How She Gone Eat, with fellow former Ohio State defensive linemen Jalyn Holmes and Tyquan Lewis. He told Eleven Warriors in February, though, that he still believes he has what it takes to play football at the highest level.

“When the new year came in, I planned on having a real busy year and a real successful year; full of wins, full of blessings,” Sprinkle said. “And that’s what you can expect from Tracy Sprinkle. I’m focused and I’m locked in on doing it, and I believe it’s going to come to light.”

Texans claim DE Tracy Sprinkle off waivers
By Aaron Wilson, Houston Chronicle

Updated 4:39 pm CDT, Saturday, August 10, 2019
The Texans claimed defensive end Tracy Sprinkle off waivers from the Cleveland Browns.

They waived-injured outside linebacker Chris Landrum.

A former Ohio State starter, Sprinkle was signed by the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent last year.

Sprinkle was cut last year by the Panthers.

Sprinkle spent time with the Atlanta franchise in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.

Sprinkle tore his patellar tendon as a junior for the Buckeyes, returning as a senior and recording 16 tackles and one pass defended. He was named a team captain.
