After allowing nose tackle Domata Peko to walk during free agency, the Denver Broncos selected versatile Ohio State defensive tackle/defensive end Dre’Mont Jones in the third round of this year’s NFL draft.

Jones isn’t a true nose tackle but he’s been practicing lining up in front of offensive tackles, inside offensive tackles and even right over the center – the position of a traditional nose tackle.

The Broncos will likely move Jones around on game days and he will be asked to help generate an interior pass rush. He’s up to the task.

“I’m very confident in my ability to pass rush,” Jones said on May 11. “I think I can make an early impact. I do what I do at a high level, and hopefully I can just continue to get better because the vets haven’t come in yet. I haven’t gotten the feel yet to really rush against an NFL pro yet. Once I get that down, I think I’ll be alright.”

Jones had a breakout year with the Buckeyes as a junior in 2018, totaling 43 tackles, 8.5 sacks, one interception and one forced fumble. Denver won’t expect that kind of production right away from Jones but it’s a sign of the kind of numbers the defensive lineman can produce.

Jones might just manage to win a starting job sooner than later.

Dre'Mont Jones signs rookie contract with Broncos

Dre'Mont Jones is getting paid.

The former Ohio State defensive tackle signed his first professional contract with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday, a day after Jones completed his first NFL offseason program. Jones was a third-round pick, 71st overall, by Denver in the 2019 NFL Draft. He is the fourth player from the Broncos 2019 draft class to sign his rookie deal, leaving only two more rookies to agree to deals.

Jones came to Ohio State out of Cleveland's St. Ignatius as a four-star prospect and the country's 10th best strong-side defensive end. He picked the Buckeyes over offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Cincinnati and other programs.

After suffering an injury during his senior year in high school, Jones redshirted during his first year in Columbus. As a redshirt freshman in 2016, he earned a starting spot at defensive tackle and recorded 51 total tackles and four tackles for a loss. He was only the third defensive lineman in school history, joining Luke Fickell and Dan Wilkinson, to start at least 10 games on the defensive line as a freshman (Jones started 12 games that season).

In 2017, Jones managed 20 total tackles, five tackles for a loss, one sack and blocked one kick. The defensive tackle thought about leaving early for the NFL Draft following his redshirt junior year but eventually announced he would return for a final season with the Scarlet and Gray.

Jones closed out his college career with a productive year, recording 43 total tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, 1 interception, 1 forced fumble, three fumbles recoveries and two total touchdowns. Jones stepped up in a big way for Ohio State after the season-ending injury to defensive end Nick Bosa three games into the season, becoming the leader of the defensive line.

Buckeye rookies Dre’Mont Jones, Kendall Sheffield impress in first NFL action
Pretty good first impression by the Ohio State alumni.

By Alexis Chassen@Lovelybuckeye Aug 4, 2019, 10:31am EDT(opens in new window)

So, the NFL Hall of Fame game is not exactly the standard for what players might look like during the regular — it isn’t even the standard for what teams are willing to show or try in the preseason — but it is the first glimpse of football for the season.

Before all 32 NFL teams take the field, or any of the college football teams embark on their season, the Hall of Fame game is the annual kick-off of fall.

That game took place last Thursday, and while starting quarterbacks don’t often get reps, and it’s mostly a way of evaluating rookies, new acquisitions and bubble players, there were a couple of new NFL Buckeyes who took the field and impressed.

Thursday’s pre-preseason matchup featured the Denver Broncos (Jeff Heuerman, Dre’Mont Jones) and Atlanta Falcons (Kendall Sheffield). The Broncos won 14-10, but much like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, the points and outcome don’t really matter.

Dre’Mont Jones
In his first taste of NFL action, the Buckeye rookie defensive tackle made three total tackles (one for loss) and three quarterback hits. After falling to the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Jones is on his way to proving that he was a close No. 2 to Nick Bosa, perhaps despite what his combine performance showed.

Some insight from Ian St. Clair of SB Nation’s Broncos site Mile High Report:

“He consistently beat his man and was a major force of disruption for the Broncos defense. Look for him to get more reps with the No. 2 defense heading into the second preseason game.”

And it seems like Broncos fans are pretty excited about Jones and his potential too, according to a poll on Mile High Report:

Denver Broncos second-year defensive end Dre'Mont Jones is expected to miss between four and six weeks with a strained PCL and bruised bone in his knee, per a report Monday afternoon by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Jones, 23, made one tackle in an injury-filled Broncos loss with Sunday's 26-21 defeat against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The 6-foot-3, 281-pound Jones looked forward to a 2020 season improvement.

"I've been getting close and close — closer and closer every day," Jones said Aug. 21. "I've felt like every day, I've improved. I've grown, I've learned more about myself. I've learned more about how to adjust when players are starting to get to know your tendencies as a pass rusher and as a player in the run downs. So I think I'm getting close."

As a rookie during the 2019 season, Jones totaled 14 tackles (three for loss), 3 1/2 sacks (six quarterback hits) and one interception (two pass breakups) in 14 games (one start).

DRE’MONT JONES HAS A DREAM SERIES

On first down, Jones sacked Goff for a nine-yard loss. On second down, Jones dropped running back Godwin Igwebuike for a three-yard tackle for loss. Following a 20-yard pass completion, the Lions went for it on 4th-and-2 from their own 33-yard line. Jones knocked down Goff's pass attempt.

What did the big fella have to say about the impressive series?
