Now that we are getting some consistent snow, who loves to turn donuts in their vehicles. I usally hit a local school or church parking lot and go spin donuts for about a half hour at a time.

I also always spin out when I am rounding corners or turning at a stop sing. I like the feelign of not having control of the car and you are just spinning.

Just stay off my street...

It was snowing the day I learned to drive. Dad had me go around the block, and then slam on the brakes at the large open area in front of our house and go into a skid so I would learn to get out of it calmly. Took a few tries before I felt comfortable enough to really slam the brakes, but it sure was fun, and the training has proved useful a few times. My mother had no idea what we were doing, though... all she saw was that I was going sideways everytime I went by the living room window. That was nearly my last day of driving as well as the first. :p

Learning to drive in snow was almost a crash course for me. Growing up in Florida, driving in snow wasn't something I did often (read: never).

The Marine Corps was kind enough to send me to Keflavik, Iceland as my first duty station. I was duty driver the day of the Superbowl, can't tell you which one, doesn't matter. I had to go out to a remote post called Rockville. So called because of the lava fields and rocky landscape around it. I know, not very imaginative.

It was snowing, and winds were pushing around 40-50 kts. The Ford Crew Cab I was driving felt like a parachute in those winds on those slick roads. Being the invincible Marine that I was, I decided if I sped up and got there faster, everything would be cool. Not the smartest move.

Coming over a hill at about 130kmh, the wind grabbed the truck, which wasn't touching the road very well coming over the rise, and threw it to the left. Pure dumb luck kept me from rolling that thing into the lava field and being found hours later.

I hate snow.

My driver's ed teacher in high school would go out with us during study hall and let us spin around the parking lot to practice. That skill has served me well many times, although not much lately! He was a hell of a good dr. ed teacher.
